From their preliminary task to the full product, the author learned several skills. They analyzed thriller movie openings to understand techniques like low-key lighting and close-up shots. They also improved their camera skills through practice, learning different shots. Their equipment skills grew from using multiple cameras between tasks. While the opening lacked thriller elements, extending it could have built more suspense as planned.
Learning from Preliminary to Final Thriller Project
1. Q.7 Looking back to your
preliminary task, what do you feel
that you have learnt in the
progression from it to the full
product?
2. Looking back at the preliminary task, we did research by looking into thriller movies and looking at
thriller openings and we analysed the camera shots, mise en scene, lighting and sound to help us
create the atmosphere for a thriller movie opening and by looking at them, it gave a clearer idea on
what to include in ours. Two examples were low key lighting to build the suspense, close up shot to
show the emotions on the face. Also learning the different editing skills which would have been
useful such as adding transitions to move onto another scene so that the movie would flow, and
adding a fade in white during flashbacks.
My use of camera shots has improved because of the amount of retakes and redrafts of scenes, my
camera work improved as I can use many different camera shots such as over the shoulder shot,
low angle shot, high angle shot, point of view shot, 2 shot, close up shot and many different ones.
From the process from the preliminary task on to the main task, we used two different camcorders
and one digital photography camera and my use of the equipment improved over time as it
required a lot of usage and it broadened my knowledge on recording equipments and made it
easier to use during the main task.
I feel that my main product did fulfil the task to a certain extent because we managed to create
suspense with the quality of the flash backs with the editing and the low key lighting and this
created the main part of the thriller movie, although the interrogation scene let us down because
of the repetitive questions and there wasn’t much thriller in the opening, although if we were to
carry on 20 minutes into the movie, then there would be more to see with the thriller and
suspense's.
