Sophia Mitchell and Isabella Smith. The pair officially formed in late 2010. The group
were placed at number ten on the DJ Magazine ‘Daze’ and have been called “the faces
of electro-house music”. Tetra is an example of an act whose name perfectly describes
the group, Tetra neon fish are unusual and stand out from the crowd and are known
to travel in pairs. This is reflected in the act. They got together to have some fun with
their hobby and party and grew to become one of house music’s most successful artists
and are still growing today.
When did their career begin?
3. Rise to fame
• Tetra produce and perform all of their personal music, their sound is their
own and is very addictive. It was never something planned, Sophia said “it
was just like, let's do this produce music, throw parties and have a blast.”
The pair started out performing in smaller clubs in their home town of
Manchester in 2010, people loved them and news of them sound spread.
Bigger clubs and producers became interested and offered them a couple
of gigs and they just went for it. Late 2012 they were top of the charts
with their first hit single “Everglade.” From their first performance in
Glow in their town Centre to performing at Reading, main stage. Tetra’s
twitter followers in 2010 was in the 2000’s, in 2013 it had risen to over
50,000.
4. Group Members
• Sophia Mitchell: Age 21
• Isabella Smith: Age 19
The pair met in the high school ‘Bishops High in their home town of
Oldham. Even though they were a couple of years apart their shared love
and enthusiasm for house music brought them together, they started by
producing and performing in Isabella’s basement and now they’re
headlining at Reading. Both girls are shocked at how far they’ve come.
Isabella said, “We literally cannot believe it, we’re getting paid for going
out and partying. House music is now our passion and our job!” Sophia is
the main producer and Isabella the main performer. Daze said “Isabella
especially is probably the best female DJ we’ve ever seen.”
5. • Their style and clothing is personal to them. When producers took notice
in them they took care to choose the correct employer because they
wanted to still be true to themselves. Sophia said “we know of so many
artists that have been completely changed just for the fame, we agreed
from the start that we wouldn’t let the fame go to our head so decided
we’d choose our own style and clothing.” Their image is very individual,
unusual and stands out from the crowd. They want their fans to see them
as role models, that they’re not afraid to be different. To appeal to those
who are afraid of being unique. They tend to wear quite grunge clothing,
sometimes neon and black to reflect house music. Sophia especially stands
out with her bright blue hair. However Tetra do not focus on their outfits
or make-up, for them the focus is more on the music.

6. Influences
• Musically, Tetra takes influence from numerous musicians from
electro/house musicians like Swedish House Mafia to rock artists like
David Bowie and Queen. They love the way they see music, they’re not
their for the fame but to just have fun whilst performing. They especially
relate to Swedish House Mafia since the split and agreed that they would
do the same if it ever became to much for them and they stopped having
fun anymore.
7. Fans
• Tetra’s fans call themselves ‘Tetrads’, which can be defined as a group
with unique elements. This reflects the group as they are unique and wish
to appeal to the people out their who are afraid of being different. They
have their own fan page, ‘TheTetrads.com’ where people post regular news
on what the girls are doing and upcoming events on their schedule. Tetra
said they are so grateful for their fans as they wouldn’t be where they are
without them. It surprised them how quickly and how greatly people
started to love them.
8. Tetra accidently got their name
• Isabella went with her brother to buy fish for his tank and they were
particularly intrigued by the neon Tetra fish. When the sales assistant
came over and explained the personality of the fish “unusual and stand
out from the crowd and are known to travel in pairs,” she knew it was
perfect and therefore came the name Tetra.
