Blumler and Katz Uses and Gratifications

•To IDENTIFY personally with characters to 
learn about ourselves 
•To be ENTERTAINED by a range of well-constructed 
texts 
•As a talking point for SOCIAL INTERACTION 
•To ESCAPE from the daily grind into other 
worlds / situations
Blumler and Katz’s Uses and Gratifications 
Theory suggests that people use media for 
different reasons. 
This part of Kerrang magazine meets two parts 
of the theory- To be informed and educated 
about the world and to act as a talking point 
for social interaction. 
The section allows the reader to be educated 
about the world by learning about new bands 
and recent gigs. It also acts as a point for social 
interaction as people may discuss not just this 
but other articles in the magazine. 
This section of the magazine fits in well with 
my own music magazine as I may include a gig 
guide and/or reviews in my magazine.
