Diffusion is the movement of molecules from low to high concentration until equilibrium is reached. Osmosis is the diffusion of water through a selectively permeable membrane and is an important process. Solutions can be isotonic when solute concentrations are equal, hypotonic when one solution has a lower solute concentration, or hypertonic when one solution has a higher solute concentration compared to another.
