3. Brief History
R&B
Although the abbreviation “R&B” originates from traditional rhythm and blues music, today the term
R&B is most often used to describe a style of African American music originating after the demise of
disco in the 1980s. Some sources refer to the style as urban contemporary (the name of the radio
format that plays hip hop and contemporary R&B).
Hip-Hop
Since its emergence in the South Bronx, hip hop culture has spread to both urban and suburban
communities throughout the world. Hip hop music first emerged with disc jockeys creating rhythmic
beats by looping breaks (small portions of songs emphasizing a percussive pattern) on two
turntables, more commonly referred to as sampling. This was later accompanied by "rap", a rhythmic
style of chanting or poetry presented in 16 bar measures or time frames, and beat boxing, a vocal
technique mainly used to imitate percussive elements of the music and various technical effects of
hip hop DJ's. An original form of dancing and particular styles of dress arose among fans of this new
music. These elements experienced considerable refinement and development over the course of
the history of the culture.
Dubstep
Dubstep is a genre of electronic dance music that originated in South London, United Kingdom. Its
overall sound has been described as "tightly coiled productions with overwhelming bass lines and
reverberant drum patterns, clipped samples, and occasional vocals".25
Dubstep rhythms are usually syncopated, and often shuffled or incorporating tuplets. The tempo is
nearly always in the range of 138-142 beats per minute, with a clap or snare usually inserted every
third beat in a bar.10 In its early stages, Dubstep was often more percussive, with more influences
from 2-step drum patterns. A lot of producers were also experimenting with tribal drum samples
