4. Starboy is a song by an American Artist
“The weekend’. This video is a hybrid of
both concept and performance based
music video’s. The video starts of like a
typical Hollywood stars life showing a
huge house in LA. The genre is a
mixture of RNB and Hip Hop.
5. Mise-en-scene and camerawork
• In this music video the mise en scene and camera work is stereotypically
associated with a black male singer
• Camerawork: High angle shots are used to portray power as the audience
is required to look up to the singer, hence emphasizing over the star’s
dominance over the audience. Close up shots are also there concentrating
on the star. Shots of the male being a criminal and killing someone can
also be seen, which is again a stereotypical representation of black people.
• Mise en scene: The chains and gold bling are seen in the music video
which are items commonly associated with black rappers. The expensive
houses and cars show his success and power, which has become a
representation for male black rappers.
6. Representation of ethnicity
• This music video represents the ethnicity of black men in society. It follows
the stereotype that they are dangerous and are prone to be involved in
crime . Evidence to support the stereotype of ethnicity when the weekend
suffocates and kills the other man himself and then goes and smashes the
flat.
• Stereotypes :
• 1. Wealthy and successful rapper
• Gold chains
• Dangerous
• Criminals
9. Representation of ethnicity
• There are two types of ethnicities represented in this music video
by clean bandit
• Black males, both shown in non stereotypical way. This is because
both are represented s loving and caring men. They are also seen to
be homosexuals which is not stereotypical and shows a different
view of black males.
• White female, shown as upper class who is highly educated as she
sings and performs in a beautiful dress.
10. Camera work/ mise en scene
• Close up shots of the white female are taken to show her talent which is
singing . A stereotypical representation of white people in high job
professions
• Master shots to show the location of the theatre, clearly a representation
of white people to be performing in a posh place for higher class whites.
• Orchestra: used to show the talent and class of white people as they are
able to play their instruments to create a beautiful symphony.
• Costumes- black suits to show class, glamorous dress to create a feministic
touch and wealth.
• Lighting- bright lights show them positively and highlights the different
between representations of black and white people.
11. Camera shots
• Two up shots to show facial expressions and
also used when one male is shown
heartbroken by his loss. This challenges the
stereotype of blacks as they are shown to be
uncaring and un emotional. Showing this side
of them shows them to be no different to any
white people. shots featured to show the two
males together. It shows their homosexual
relationship and how much they love and care
for one another.
