Age
• In media age is a very important aspect in the categorising of characters.
• Youth are generally seen as troublemaking, violent and while they are
sometimes portrayed as being clever still inexperienced and powerless.
• Proffessionals (25-40) seen as the ones who have power within society.
• Old-age is seen as ultra-conservative, old fashioned and out of touch with
modern day reality.
Region
• Often where a character comes from affects their place within the hierarchy in society, especially in media.
• Regional representations are often ignorant to the ideals of mainstream culture.
• Regional representation often heavily stereotyped.
Race
• Ethnic minority groups are portrayed as being subservient in job roles.
• Often ethnic minority groups are involved in drugs, violence and anti-social behaviour.
• Ethnic minority groups are often of their inability to climb the social ladder.
Class
• Upper classes associations stick to their own classes socially.
• Any interaction with the lower classes are involved in employer/employee relationship.
• Usually seen as highly educated albeit ignorant to the plights of lower classes.
• Lower classes are stereotyped as being violent and uneducated.
Gender
• Women objectified to be sexual objects to men.
• Women often subservient to men, in both professional and personal relationships.
Sexuality
• Homosexuals are often portrayed as ultra-feminine or ultra-masculine depending on the gender.
• Work roles are usually hospitality or industry based (designer, bar, club).
• Party-boy lifestyle provident (sex, drugs, partying).
