There have been many issues of ineffective communication causing directives not to be carried out properly due to its unclear nature. For an example there was an email sent out that stated that the recipient (within the R&D team) was to “create a presentation discussing the new product and send it to the departments who are interested.” The sender of the email did not specify the product he was talking about, since there can be multiple products under development in the R&D department. In addition to this, he didn’t list down any specifications of the aforementioned presentation, the agenda, the length, the purpose, and what it should cover. He also failed to elaborate which departments would be considered “interested”, and what would be the basis on which the R&D team should select the departments to whom the presentation is to be sent.
The second example involved a request for help from the Sales department to Technical Support to help them “with a list of the biggest problems with our hot products”. The sales department only mentioned a list of the problems, and didn’t actually list down the problems themselves. If the Technical Support had an idea of the problems that were faced, they would be adequately prepared to deal with them, and appoint the right man for the job. Secondly, the sales team did not elaborate which products it considered the hot products. And lastly, they also did not set an appointment for the meeting, nor did they highlight the impact of the problems on the sales of the product, and consequently, did not communicate effectively the intensity of the situation. The last example included a memo from the Finance department to all departments to “reduce the number of suppliers being used to better control costs”. This is a very general statement and the finance department did not tell how the cost would be saved and how much impact reducing each supplier would bring. They also did not explain how to reduce the suppliers and still carry on the routine tasks normally. No instructions on how to carry out the order accompanied it. After close review of these directives, they seem to lack clarity, which is unacceptable. To improve these messages, we must eliminate certain barriers within in communication. Clarity in communication is essential for effective communication. However, a lot of potential barriers can arise in communication such as messages with complex content, information that is not been transmitted willfully, ineffective communication through the hierarchy, and no trust amongst different parties because of competition. (Boundless, 2016).

At institutions of higher education the offering of online courses and online enrollments continues to grow at a rapid rate (Allen & Seaman, 2010b). Today’s students desire the flexibility provided by online courses and the anytime, anywhere learning they provide. In a recent examination of the state of online education in the U.S., Allen and Seaman found that more than 75% of public colleges and universities believe that online course offerings are an important part of their long-term strategic growth plans (2010b, 2011). Furthermore, during the recent economic downturn these same institutions have seen an increased demand for online courses and programs. This change presents a conundrum for institutions of higher education: They are facing increasing demands for online courses with smaller budgets (Allen & Seaman, 2010b). How can they meet this demand? Many are attempting to address this demand through increasing class sizes (Gunter, 2007; Moskal, Dziuban, Upchurch, Hartman, & Truman, 2006; Nagel & Kotze, 2010). Yet, these same institutions recognize that retaining students in online courses is more difficult (Allen & Seaman, 2010a).
The most frequently cited reasons for student dissatisfaction with online courses and high attrition is the lack of social presence and a lack of interaction with the instructor and other students, which leads to feelings of isolation (Rovai & Downey, 2010; Rovai, Ponton, Wighting, & Baker, 2007; Stodel, Thompson, & McDonald, 2006). On the other hand, the Internet has evolved into an interactive communication tool with continuing improvement of technologies such as social networking, digital media, Web 2.0 tools, social communication, and streaming media. There have been many issues of ineffective communication causing directives not to be carried out properly due to its unclear nature. For an example there was an email sent out that stated that the recipient (within the R&D team) was to “create a presentation discussing the new product and send it to the departments who are interested.” The sender of the email did not specify the product he was talking about, since there can be multiple products under development in the R&D department. In addition to this, he didn’t list down any specifications of the aforementioned presentation, the agenda, the length, the purpose, and what it should cover. He also failed to elaborate which departments would be considered “interested”, and what would be the basis on which the R&D team should select the departments to whom the presentation is to be sent.
The second example involved a request for help from the Sales department to Technical Support to help them “with a list of the biggest problems with our hot products”. The sales department only mentioned a list of the problems, and didn’t actually list down the problems themselves. If the Technical Support had an idea of the problems that were faced, they would be adequately prepared to deal with them, and appoint the right man for the job. Secondly, the sales team did not elaborate which products it considered the hot products. And lastly, they also did not set an appointment for the meeting, nor did they highlight the impact of the problems on the sales of the product, and consequently, did not communicate effectively the intensity of the situation. The last example included a memo from the Finance department to all departments to “reduce the number of suppliers being used to better control costs”. This is a very general statement and the finance department did not tell how the cost would be saved and how much impact reducing each supplier would bring. They also did not explain how to reduce the suppliers and still carry on the routine tasks normally. No instructions on how to carry out the order accompanied it. After close review of these directives, they seem to lack clarity, which is unacceptable. To improve these messages, we must eliminate certain barriers within in communication. Clarity in communication is essential for effective communication. However, a lot of potential barriers can arise in communication such as messages with complex content, information that is not been transmitted willfully, ineffective communication through the hierarchy, and no trust amongst different parties because of competition. (Boundless, 2016).

At institutions of higher education the offering of online courses and online enrollments continues to grow at a rapid rate (Allen & Seaman, 2010b). Today’s students desire the flexibility provided by online courses and the anytime, anywhere learning they provide. In a recent examination of the state of online education in the U.S., Allen and Seaman found that more than 75% of public colleges and universities believe that online course offerings are an important part of their long-term strategic growth plans (2010b, 2011). Furthermore, during the recent economic downturn these same institutions have seen an increased demand for online courses and programs. This change presents a conundrum for institutions of higher education: They are facing increasing demands for online courses with smaller budgets (Allen & Seaman, 2010b). How can they meet this demand? Many are attempting to address this demand through increasing class sizes (Gunter, 2007; Moskal, Dziuban, Upchurch, Hartman, & Truman, 2006; Nagel & Kotze, 2010). Yet, these same institutions recognize that retaining students in online courses is more difficult (Allen & Seaman, 2010a).
The most frequently cited reasons for student dissatisfaction with online courses and high attrition is the lack of social presence and a lack of interaction with the instructor and other students, which leads to feelings of isolation (Rovai & Downey, 2010; Rovai, Ponton, Wighting, & Baker, 2007; Stodel, Thompson, & McDonald, 2006). On the other hand, the Internet has evolved into an interactive communication tool with continuing improvement of technologies such as social networking, digital media, Web 2.0 tools, social communication, and streaming media. Maria is an eight-year-old daughter of Mexican-American parents who recently immigrated to the United States. They speak some English, and Maria is fluent in both English and Spanish. She is enrolled in third grade at the local public elementary school. Since second grade, her parents have reported concerns about her difficulty in paying attention or maintaining her concentration. They indicate that she has significant difficulty in completing her homework because she daydreams and is easily distracted by sounds and activities in the home. The system of federalism was instituted with the writing and authorization of the Constitution in 1787. In dividing power between states and the national government, federalism has undergone challenges to the placement of power. Should power reside primarily in national or in state government? The Civil War was the most dramatic challenge to the placement of power. Southern states argued, under the leadership of John C. Calhoun, that states’ power superseded national power, while northern states, under the leadership of President Abraham Lincoln, stressed the need for union under the leadership and direction of the national government.
In the more than two hundred years since the Constitution’s adoption, there have been many changes to the meaning of federalism, with power shifting between state and national governments. In the twentieth century, the shifts of power became largely associated with the national government’s ability to provide increased funding sources. With more funding available, the national government has expanded its impact on all areas of state governments. This increased power has had many advocates and many detractors, each with strong justifications.
