CFSC  Conference   Internship  and  Job  Seekers  Forum  Notes   • The  “To  be  considered”  resumes   o Look  for  keywords  associated  with  the  job  and  organization  (e.g.,  if  applying  to  a   development  position  include  information  about  development  experiences  and  dollars   raised,  etc.)   o Clean  and  concise.  1  or  2  page  resumes;  don’t  list  experience  from  10  years  prior   o Taylor  resume  to  job  at  hand   o Numbers  to  quantify  accomplishments   o Be  able  to  explain  gaps  in  resume  or  if  you’ve  had  multiple  jobs  in  a  year-­‐-­‐  use  the  cover   letter  to  explain   o It  is  good  to  show  thoughtfulness;  connect  to  the  mission  of  the  organization  and  show  that   you  understand  the  operation   o Provide  example  of  work  if  applying  to  a  development  or  writing  position,  unless  told  not  to   in  directions     Internships    (Sarah  Alexander,  Food  &  Water  Watch)   • Internships  are  a  great  opportunity  to  test  out  the  field,  gain  experience  (especially  in  the  food   world/movement),  have  the  potential  for  future  positions   • Internship  process  goes  both  ways  a  little  more  than  searching  for  jobs   o Organizations  to  have  a  plan  and  training  for  intern  to  gain  knowledge  and  skills   • Tips  for  Internships:   o Know  what  you  are  looking  for-­‐  policy,  farm/agriculture,  direct  service,  advocacy   o Do  educational  interviews    Make  it  easy  for  the  organization;  have  a  time  limit  and  be  prepared  with  questions   o Prepare  for  internship  interview  as  if  it  were  a  job  interview   o Be  persistent  (but  not  too  persistent)    Follow  up  in  a  week  if  you  don’t  hear  from  the  interviewer   o Be  thankful-­‐  always  nice  to  send  a  thank  you  note  or  card     Bill  Emerson  National  Hunger  Fellows  Program  (Shana  McDavis-­Conway,  Hunger  Fellows)   • Building  leadership  now  for  future  leaders   • Hunger,  poverty  and  food  justice   • Commitment  to  anti-­‐oppresion   • Recruit  20  fellows  per  year-­‐  currently  recruiting;  January  18th  deadline   • 10  month  fellowship  broken  into  5  months  of  community  work  and  5  months  of  policy  work  in  D.C.   • Project-­‐based  internships-­‐  placement  in  many  grassroots,  advocacy  and  community-­‐based   organizations   • Fellows  build  connections  and  tangible  and  useful  work  experience       De-­mystifying  the  hiring  process  (Andy  Fisher,  Community  Food  Security  Coalition)   • Recent  hiring  experience   o Received  123  resumes  for  a  mid-­‐level  job  in  one  month   o Broke  into  3  piles  (no/no  way,  maybe,  and  yes)  and  narrowed  it  down  to  20  or  30     o Had  two  staff  persons  review  and  narrowed  it  down  6  or  7  applicants   o Drafted  interview  questions   o First  round  interviews;  then  narrowed  it  down  to  2  or  3  for  second  interviews   o Drafted  second  interview  questions   o Talked  with  references-­‐  talk  with  most  current  supervisor  and  look  for  any  red  flags   • The  hiring  process  is  very  time  consuming  on  the  organizations  end   • Andy’s  motto:  the  resume  gets  you  the  interview  and  the  interview  gets  you  the  job
