When the VY Holden was released it was a breath of fresh air, which gave a new look
and feel to the latest gen of Commodores at the time. This generation was night like past
versions, it looked just a bit different, with a more modern, aggressive look. A main
change to the design was the front lights, with a more aggressive look. The luxury models
were given a different style where as the standard versions still had what they called the
"tear drop" in the headlamp.
Projector lights were also an extra feature of the more luxurious models of the VY LED
Headlights for Commodore. Given the popularity of Euro vehicles at the time, Holden
styled the VY LED Headlights to be inline with the European style.
A notable tail light step up was the the inclusion of triangular tail lights, which gave the
tail of the VY LED Headlights a new look. Once again different versions received
slightly different taillight designs. The final version of generation three Commodores, the
VZ was given only minimal changes to style and look, with only minimum changes to the
2. headlights and taillights. The projector light was retained on the more top version.
The popular Calais models were also provided with a new addition, having darker tinting
now popular on the bottom half of the back lights.
There was a big gap between the VZ and the VE with some 9 years of development. With
nearly One Billion Dollars invested on the development of the VE, Holden spend the
time on getting this said model looking just right. The VE Commodore was also
completely designed in Australia which was also a first for Holden. The new style of the
VE looked fantastic. A seriously lower, wider angle joined with even weight distribution
for improved handling and blazed guards, the VE really gave the people what they
needed.
Larger and more stockier, the headlights on the VE were a little larger then the older
style. Projector headlamps once again done an appearance in luxury styles in reason to
the success in the previous years. Some of the largest fixes for the VE was the difference
of style for the tail lights. Luxury models were put with Euro style tail lamps while the
flashier models, including the SSV, were provided with better, and widely popular red
circle and black chrome features. Yet again these became a known upgrade with owners
of common design VE Commodore’s tail lights.
3. In a big move for Holden, the extravagant design HSV was given an entirely new behind
part to provide it with a fully fresh and special look. In conclusion this was an act going
to a more Euro type model and was received well when it was introduced. Many say that
this was due to the familiarity of the European model during that time and the path
towards more European designing.
