Objective:

3. Assessment Evidence:
The s’s will create a an original face card design based on playing cards on 14x20 inch poster board.
The s’s will be required to develop complex patterns in their clothing.
4. Opening Hook:
Ask students to recall what face cards look like in a traditional deck of cards.
Ask what colors they recall from a traditional deck of cards(i.e. red,yellow,black, white, blue)
Show s’s face cards from a traditional deck of cards
Discuss the features of each of the face cards. Ask what observations they can make from the details of each card.
5. Instructional Strategies/Student Activities:
· Class measuring activity involving proportions playing cards
· The s’s will be challenged to draw themselves as a face card (King, Queen, or Jack)
· The s’s will be required to develop complex patterns in their clothing and their palette will be limited to the colors
found on the face cards they have studied (red, yellow, white, blue, black)
· After determining their “suit”, “pose” (3/4 view or profile) and the object(s) they would be holding, photos will be
taken of them, in which the s’s can use for reference.
· The s’s may draw from observation or grid the photo in order to enlarge it

The s’s will be randomly assigned a poster to describe (no judgment allowed!) in a written paragraph or
two and they must also complete a self-assessment of their own poster. They must slow down, look,
think and write This will help them gain appreciation for their own skills, as well as for those of their peers.
