4. PREFACE
"On the day of Qayamat you will be called by your
names and the names of your father’s, therefore keep
good names."
(Aboo Dawood)
Rasoolullah Sallallahu-alayhi-Wasallam said, “who ever is
named after me with the hope of being blessed, he will
be blessed and will be in peace till the day of Qayamat.'
It is child's vested right to be honoured with a good name.
When choosing a name for the child, it should be done
with the intention that the child will be blessed with the
'Barkat' of the name.
It was Rasr-alullah's practice to enquire the names of
persons and VHiages while moving to different places.
If they were pieasent, it became apparent on his face.
If not. his displeasure could be ueen.
After birth, the child should be given proper bath. There
after the message of the Greatness and Oneness of Allah
Ta’ala and the Prophet-hood of Rasoolullah should be the
first words to reach the Child's innocent ears. This should
be accomplished by giving 'Azaan' near his right ear and
'Iqaaman' close to his leftear. This noble task should be
the prerogative of an Alim' (learned pe'son) or a pious
elder of the family. If such a person is not available then
any muslim can preform this Sunnat. It is a tradition to
5. remove the child’s hair and to observe the aqeeqSh'. and
to name the child on the seventh day after birth. Silver
equivalent to the weight of the removed hair, or equivalent
value in money, may be given as charity to the poor.
'Aqeeqah' is a form of 'Sadqah' whereby the child is safe
guarded against misfortunes. Two sheeps or' two goats
are offered for a boy while one goat or a sheep for a
girl, the child being named by a member of the family
or by some 'Alim' venerated by the family.
It is my least effort to provide useful Muslim names for
lay readers, parents and scholors.
May 'Allah' Ta'ala guide us on the Right path. Ameen
5th January. 1996 ANJUM NISHAT
