Community Bicycle Center
Introductory Information
Review Session #1: Tool Usage – best tool selection, correct tool sizing, safe tool
use, correct tool use & leverage
Behavior Management Plan: Guidelines (Right to be Safe, right to Learn, and the
Right to be Respected) and THE RULES
Attendance Tracker: How to fill out the form – community service versus volunteer
hours.
Drop-in sessions: only use tools, grease, oil, and cleaners. No use of parts so stay
out of the bins, shelves, and cabinets. Let others use shop.
Systems and Vocabulary of Bicycles
1. Bike-in-a-Box Activity: split the group into two teams and have each team re-
construct (layout) the bicycle from the box they are given.
Purpose – begin to see how all of the various parts of the bike are connected and oriented
in relationship to the whole.
Activity Extensions –1) label the parts and/or 2) find the tools that are necessary to
repair the specific systems.
Emphasize systems – frame; wheels & tires (pneumatic suspension); rotational systems:
bottom bracket – hubs - headsets; braking system; drive train: derailleur and chain.
2. Bicycle Tool Relay Race: split the group into two teams and have each team proceed
through the bike tool relay race cards. Have the participants find the relay race tools and
pace them on the Bike-in-a-Box bike next to the system or part they are used for during
repairs.
Skills Session
Continue with scavenging parts from discarded bikes and organizing the scavenged
parts into the parts bins. The purpose is to formalize introduction to tools, scavenging and
recycling parts, and getting oriented to the shop. In the future develop an orienteering
activity to help the kids become familiar with the layout of the shop and where parts and
supplies are located.
