4. Advanced Search: Reading Level Enter your search terms. On the results page, click Advanced search. ‘Basic’ = elementary level texts ‘Intermediate’ = more advanced texts ‘Advanced’ = you have got to be kidding
6. How Google Instant Works Start typing and Google starts searching. You no longer need to click the “Google Search” or “I’m Feeling Lucky” buttons to see your results. Google predicts your search and shows the results before you finish typing. “Google Instant can save 2-5 seconds per search.”
7. Filtering the “Bad” Stuff Google does a pretty good [and constantly-improving] job of filtering out most offensive materials from Google Instant suggestions. Search for a ‘blacklisted’ word or phrase and nothing displays … until you press Enter.
8. Autocomplete Me Part of the Cheezburger Network of sites [and not affiliated with Google], Autocomplete Me is a collection of screen grabs of Google Suggest results. Note: Some of the screen grabs are old and may contain offensive language. autocompleteme.com
9. Recipes Search for an ingredient, food, or event and then click ‘Recipes’. You can then refine your search by additional ingredients, cooking time, and even calories.
10. More Search Tools On the results page, click “Show search tools”. This gives you more search options including Related searches Sites with images Translated foreign pages
11. Refine Your Searches by Location Click “nearby” to limit results to pages that are … well … nearby. You can choose to see results either near your default location or near a custom location. You can also narrow results to the city, region, or state level.
13. Wonder Wheel The Wonder Wheel shows search terms related to what you searched for. Navigate through the relevant key words and phrases to find more and more results. Click “Standard view” to view the original results.
14. Additional Options ‘Sites with images’ displays a handful of images per hit. ‘Related Searches’ shows sites that are related to your original search term. ‘Translated foreign pages’ looks for hits on pages written in languages other than English and then translates those pages for you.

17. Lock Safe Search Google now lets you lock Safe Search filtering. Go to google.com/preferences and click Lock Safe Search. This will filter explicit text and explicit images from your search results across over 200 Google sites. NOTE: You must do this in each web browser on your computer.
18. Checking that Safe Search is on If you see four colored balls in the top right corner of the results screen, Safe Search is on. You will also see “SafeSearch is Locked” under the search box. Note: No filter can block every explicit text or image.

27. YouTube HTML5 Beta youtube.com/html5 If you have Safari 4 or Google Chrome, you can choose to use the HTML5 player instead of the Flash player for most YouTube videos. This is an opt-in beta trial, so expect some bugs.

30. Cloud Connect for Microsoft Office Like the collaborative features of Google Docs but prefer to keep using Microsoft Office? Cloud Connect is an Office plug-in that lets you share, backup, and simultaneously edit Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, and Excel documents. 31. Google Public DNS One cause of slow page loads, especially on complex web pages, is slow DNS lookups. Google has made their incredibly speedy DNS servers available to the public at no cost. 32. Google Goggles Google Googles is a visual search application that lets you search the web by taking a picture with your Android’s or iPhone’s camera. For more information: google.com/mobile/goggles Oh, and it solves Sudoku puzzles too.
34. Google URL Shortener goo.gl Paste a long URL in the box. Google will convert that URL to a goo.gl shortcut. Add .qr to the end of any goo.gl-shortened URL to convert it into a QR code.
35. Google Moderator google.com/moderator Google Moderator is a free tool that allows distributed communities to submit and vote on questions for talks, presentations, and events. Participants vote on whether or not the questions are ‘good.’ Moderator automatically tallies the votes and displays the best questions first.
36. LIFE Photo Archive Millions of photographs from the LIFE archive are now included in Google Image Search. Browse the archive directly or add source:life to limit your search to the LIFE archive http://images.google.com/hosted/life
37. Google Dictionary Google Dictionary lets you search through the Oxford Pocket Dictionary of Current English. It includes not only definitions but also Pronunciations, Conjugations, Related phrases, Related languages, and Usage examples.
