In 1881, native New Yorker George D. Dayton purchases land on Nicollet Avenue and forms the Dayton Dry Goods Company; which today is known as Target Corporation.
On May 1, 1962, Dayton Dry Goods became Target in a grand opening in Roseville, Minnesota.
In 1975, Target was named the number one revenue producer, which introduced weekly newspaper advertisements.
In 1983, Target opens its first stores in Southern, California. In 1989, Target had stores in thirty-two different states.
On September 30th, 1990, Target expanded the original Minnesota store to fifty percent larger than the standard Target store. This helped create a better shopping environment for customers. The new store layout included more service options, such as allowing customers to buy food, along with an expanded pharmacy, and electronic informations stations with price scanners.
In 1995, the branding of Target introduced the slogan, “Expect More. Pay Less.”.
Also in the year 1995, the first Super Target store opened. Super Target is a bigger version of the standard Target, which allows customers to shop at one place for all of their needs.
Target offers over 1,806 stores in the United States, including 38 distribution centers and has hired over 323,000 team members worldwide, including workers that are customer service technicians.
More than 10,000 team members participate in our diversity and inclusion business councils, which provide onboarding, networking and professional development opportunities for team members.
