1. Belfast
Belfast is the capital of Northern Ireland. Belfast is divided
into four Northern Ireland Assembly and UK
Parliamentary Constituencies: North Belfast, West
Belfast, South Belfast and East Belfast. Belfast (from Irish:
BéalFeirste, meaning "mouth of the sandbars").Belfast
has been a centre for the Irish linen industry (earning the
nickname "Linenopolis"): tobacco production, rope-
making, shipbuilding, computers and whiskey.
There are many important buildings in Belfast but the
most known are:
- The City Hall was finished in 1906 and was built to
reflect Belfast's city status, granted by Queen
Victoria in 1888. Belfast City Hall is Belfast City
Council's civic building. It is located in Donegall
Square, in the heart of Belfast city centre. It first
opened its doors on 1 August 1906. Today, the
grounds of City Hall are a favourite of city centre
workers, students and tourists for taking a break
from the bustling city. The grounds are also used for
many events from continental markets to open air
concerts. There are many connections between The
City Hall and Titanic. In its grounds, the Titanic
Memorial, sculpted by Thomas Brock, pays tribute to
22 men who lost their lives on the ship.
2. - The Big Wheel is Located at the east side of Belfast
City Hall, the Wheel of Belfast offered spectacular
views across the city, from a height of 200 feet.
- One of the most popular parks is Botanic Gardens in
the Queen's Quarter. Built in the 1830s and designed
by Sir Charles Lanyon. Other attractions in the park
include the Tropical Ravine, a humid jungle glen built
in 1889, rose gardens and public events ranging from
live opera broadcasts to pop concerts. U2 played
there in 1997.
