Solar System Unit
1. The Solar System - This is a preview of what’s to come in our classroom including: activities to be completed and objectives to be met.
2. Unit Overview This presentation will inform you of the upcoming unit we will be discussing. It is called, “The Solar System.” The purpose of this unit is to allow students to collaborate with their peers and the community in designing a Planetary Brochure. The activity will cover the following objectives: Students will:-Learn content by answering higher order thinking questions through the use of technology. -Be able to clearly identify the planets, the Sun, and Earth’s moon.-Utilize their creativity skills by creating and completing the projects listed above.
3. Benefits of unit The benefits of the unit will come in the students knowing the planets. The students will gain knowledge about our solar system and how it is, and how it works.
4. Objectives To learn the order of the planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. To learn about our solar system which is Particularly about the sun and the earth. to understand The Solar System is centered around the sun which means that it orbits around the sun
5. PBL: Project based learning PBL is a way of learning that allows the students to be more own their own. This way of learning allows the students to show more by allowing them to complete projects on their own which some of the work being done in the classroom. PBL will be used by the students to make a project of a brochure of a chosen planet. Within this project they will show why someone should visit the planet that they have chosen.
6. Roles for our Project Role of Teacher The role of the teacher within this unit will be to help the students better understand the solar system. The teacher will assist the students in any way that they need help in. The teacher will also be there as a encouragement to the students. Role of the Student The role of the student will to be able to identify the plants, the sun and the moon in our solar system. The students will have to be self motivated with some projects at home, they will also need self motivation for at home studying. Role of the Parents The role of the parents needs to be that they are willing to help their student. While some of the projects are started here in the classroom, most of them will be finished at home. With the help of a parent the student will have more effect on finishing the project. With the help of a parent the students tend to show that they are proud of their work! So for you as a parent, please be encouraging to your student on finishing all his/her work!
7. Questions Essential: how can we look at the planets from Earth? Unit: what makes up the solar system Content: Name the planets of our solar system in order that they appear.
8. Unit Summary In this unit we will learn about our solar system. Particularly about the sun and the earth. Our Solar System is in the Milky Way Galaxy. There are 8 (excluding Pluto) planets in our solar system. The Solar System is centered around the sun which means that it orbits around the sun. The planet order goes like this: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. Every planet has at least one moon. Some have many more than one. The sun is a middle-sized star. At the core the sun is 1 million degrees F. The temperature on the surface is 10,000 degrees F. Earth is the only planet in our Solar System that sustains life to our knowledge. This is due to its perfect positioning in the solar system. It we were closer to the sun we would burn up, and if we were farther away we would freeze. The Earth is 70% water and 30% land.
9. ALEX Standards Being Met: 11.) Identify basic components of our solar system, including the sun, planets, and Earth's moon
