2. GOAL SETTING
Many people feel as though they work hard, but may
feel as though they don’t seem to get anywhere
worthwhile.
An individual might feel this way if they have not
spent enough time planning where they want to be in
life.
3. A GOAL IS A PLAN
Establish your overall plan for your future, then
break it down into smaller, more easily achievable,
parts.
Accomplishing those smaller goals will motivate you
to work towards your ‘Big Picture’ goal!
4. YOUR GOALS ARE YOUR MAP
Think of your goals as a map, pointing you in the
direction of your destination.
6. SPECIFIC
It’s hard to reach a goal if you don’t know exactly
what you’re striving for.
Example:
More effective: I want to be an A student.
Less effective: I want to improve my grades.
More Effective: I want to attend college in
the fall
Less Effective: I want to go to college
sometime in the future.
7. MEASUREABLE
Make sure you can measure your success. It will
keep you motivated.
Example:
More effective: I will dedicate x number of
hours to studying each day.
Less effective: I will work harder.
8. ATTAINABLE
Be sure you set yourself up for success. Be
realistic with your goal setting.
More effective: I will turn in every assignment
on time.
Less effective: I will get a perfect score on
every assignment
the entire semester.
9. RELEVANT
Although goals need to be attainable, if they are too
easy no growth will occur. Make sure your goals will
encourage you to improve.
More effective: I will complete
units one and two of
CPMA 3000 this month
Less effective: I will do very
well in my classes this term.
.
10. TIME BOUND
Setting a time limit on your goal will help keep you
focused and make sure you actually reach the goal.
More effective: I will complete CPEN 4000
in the next 4 months.
Less effective: I will work on CPEN 4000
over the next semester.
11. WHERE TO BEGIN
To
write your goals, reflect on where you
have been and where you want to go.
• What do you want to accomplish?
• Visualise yourself getting there
• What skills are needed?
• What strategies should you use?
12. WRITE YOUR GOAL
STATEMENT
Following the SMART method, write down your
educational goal statement.
Remember, believing in yourself is the key to
success.
