Editor's Notes
Internews was founded in 1982 with the mission to develop media programs to reduce tensions between enemy countries (namely, USSR) and lessen the threat of war. Broadcast a program that brought together US and USSR scientists to discuss nuclear war (first time USSR scientists publicly admitted threat of nuclear war), produced documentaries on Soviet-US relations, created “space bridges” that used satellite TV to which brought leaders of the USA and Soviet Union together to talk to each other in front of mass audiences
Since then, has expanded its mission and work significantly, both in terms of geography, types of media, and audiences. Focus on local media and expansion of access to information.
Internews was originally based in California (where the business headquarters are). DC office – program headquarters – opened in January 2000. Internews now employs over 600 number of staff – roughly 100 in the United States, and over 500 elsewhere in the world. Internews is a $56 million organization.
Internews has worked with citizens and local media in more than 90 countries. Together with local partners such as universities and other non-profit organizations, Internews has supported the development of thousands of media outlets worldwide, including radio and television stations, newspapers, mobile news networks, and online news sites.
Historically active in E&E and Asia more recently, have branched into MENA and sub-Saharan Africa now breaking into Latin America

Telling Local Stories
Internews works with media professionals and citizen journalists to produce original, high-quality programming that meets the needs of local communities. Internews trains thousands of people each year in journalism, production, and management skills.
Internews works to ensure people’s access to information through whatever technological means they choose. Working with national governments and key stakeholders, Internews is creating an enabling environment for an affordable and user-controlled Internet.
Increasing the free flow of information through Vietnam’s highly restrictive society by training CSOs and young web users to use social media platforms safely and responsibly.
Sustainable and replicable business models are critical to the long-term success of local media. Internews’ support for media outlets includes training staff in advertising sales and management to ensure that they are financially sound.
Close mentoring of business development teams to develop strategies to compete in a print media market that has seen the rapid increase of outlets following the lifting of extreme government regulations.
To allow independent media to fulfill their “watchdog” function, Internews has worked for the adoption and implementation of fair media and internet laws and policies in countries around the world.
Internews’ Media Support Initiative in the Central Asian Republics supported legal advocacy to improve the enabling environment for independent media throughout Central Asia. We networked our partners throughout the region, creating the foundation for groups of like-minded people to advocate for each other and for media independence. Our media law team also initiated a number of media law coalitions, significantly impacting the legal and regulatory media environment. The project supported positive changes including decriminalization of defamation in Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and a strategy for digital switchover that guaranteed frequencies to independent regional stations in Kazakhstan.
(See next slide for a longer description of the Internews Center for Innovation and Learning)
The Center for Innovation and Learning experiments with, captures, and shares innovative approaches to communication from around the world. Each region has an innovation advisor who works with teams to adapt and localize best practices from other Internews projects and technology users around the world. Recent projects include: Innovation Labs and hackathons, Afghanistan elections map, and the new crisis communications map in Central African Republic.

At the heart of Internews’ work is a commitment to empowering individuals and groups around the world not just to have easy and affordable access to independent local media, but to have their voices and their stories heard in by their fellow community members.
New Orleans: The Listening Post, which is a collaboration between a local New Orleans radio station and Internews, seeks to establish a two-way conversation with residents through which people can both contribute thoughts and commentary about issues in their neighborhoods, and also receive news and information in convenient and accessible ways.

Internews works with reporters to cover conflict constructively, avoiding inflammatory or “body count” styles of reporting on war and violence.
Radio-in-a-Box Humanitarian Information Service: Portable radio service that can move with population if necessary. Resident journalism advisor based with the station trains a group of correspondents to source, gather, and produce news and feature content from the community.
Internews media projects open eyes to gender and youth issues and give voice to women and children so that they can change their lives for the better.
Eastern Chad: weekly radio program “She Speaks, She Listens” focused on gender-based violence against female refugees from Darfur. Internews built three radio stations and formed a team of journalists who aim to help women and girls access valuable resources.
Egypt: Internews-trained youth interviewed local experts and produced “Our Constitution is our Right,” a play that uses humor to depict their perspectives on the drafting of the Egyptian constitution.

The Earth Journalism Network was developed to empower and enable journalists from developing countries to cover the environment more effectively. EJN manages an online network of 1,250 environmentally-focused journalists from around the world, and from 2006 to 2013 trained over 3000 journalists in a variety of environmental issues including oceans, climate change, and forests.
Burma: reporting exhibition down Irrawaddy River – and photo book and exhibitions that followed - helped influence government policy that halted the construction of a controversial dam.

Internews recognizes the importance of the free flow of news and information in fostering good governance and transparency in countries around the world.
The Open Budget initiative, a pilot project supported by the Internews Center for Innovation and Learning, brings together civil servants, civil society workers, ICT experts, and journalists to develop online tools to find new solutions for sharing complex and confusing municipal budget information with the public, and to work with the media to produce data-driven stories that people can understand.

Internews works with journalists to improve the quality and quantity of reporting on health issues, including HIV/AIDS.
In Kenya, Internews works with media to develop a comprehensive and sustained media response to issues such as HIV/AIDS, child and maternal health and malaria.
Through training in data analysis and reporting skills, Internews helps journalists use the power of data to shed light on complex issues.
As part of Open Government Partnership, made wealth of data available; working with journalists to visualize this data (particularly on issues related to health, traffic safety, etc.) in clear and innovative ways.
In crises around the world information saves lives. Internews supports local media to enable people in the midst of a disaster to take an active role in their own survival and recovery.
Boda Boda Talk Talk involves a radio with speakers attached to a quad bike that moves around an IDP camp and broadcasting humanitarian information at public “Listening Stops.”
