2. Retail Distribution – Pros and Cons
Benefits of a Properly Managed Distribution
Channels
• Bring the product closer to the consumer
• Leverage the brand equity of a trusted source
• Exponentially grow revenue
The downside of Poor Execution
• Rapid price erosion
• Inconsistent brand presentation
• Higher cost of sales
• Lost control of the consumer experience
3. Avoid Chaos
Plan your Distribution Strategy
• Define your customer profiles and build from there!
• Choose complimentary channel partners
• Make room in the margin for retailer, co-op, mdf, 2%/net?
• In-house support needed for a major direct relationship
• Plan your Rep strategy, who, for what, how long?
4. Retailers Don’t Sell Your Product For You!
To often we see manufacturers eagerly work to get
into a major retailer only to sit and wait. It is not their
job to sell your product. Plan marketing on your
terms. Use, but don’t depend on the retailers
marketing tools.
5. Know The Value You Bring To The Channel?
The retailer has millions of customers on whom
they have spent millions to build their brand.
Know the retailers customer. Market and present
the product to meet that customer’s needs.
Sell-Through is our primary objective!
6. Manufacturer Representatives
If you plan mass distribution you will build your
retail channel through a combination of direct
relationships and those initiated by a rep. Good
reps can save you time. Proper Rep preparation
benefits everyone.
