2. Lyrics
• In the song “Intoxicated”, there are only 10 different words. This
suggests that all they are interested in is partying and have no time
for nothing else, “lets dance, no time for romance”. The lyrics suggest
that they are on drugs, and there are several scenes in the video that
show this.
This shows the
artist sliding
down a pole in
front of multiple
plants of weed
3. Music
•The song has a constant tune, it is quite a fast
tempo and the video is edited to match the best
of the music
4. Mise en scene
In the music video there is many different uses of mise en scene.
Firstly, there are many different costumes that suggest wealth, for
example, the man in the grey suit washing his car, he has an expensive
suit on, washing the rims of his car which are extremely shiny, this can
link to the wealth needed to use drugs. The many different locations
used in the video, can show the different hallucinations that drugs can
give you, for example imagining being in the mountains playing
badminton. The outfits of the females in the video are similar to those
that artist such as Lady Gaga would wear in her videos. The particular
girl with the fan always has very revealing clothes on, this appeals to
the male audience and could attract more watchers. There is a
constant theme of games, chess, boxing and badminton, this could
suggest a competitive nature between those or also could suggest that
life is just a game. The last location shown in the video is of the main
artist topless swinging around a pole, in front of plants that look like
weed. This might be showing how he is celebrating, because maybe he
won the game or maybe he is “intoxicated” and unable to control his
actions
5. Camerawork
• The video is mainly made up of eye level camera shots of both the main artist and
also all the other people in the video. Sometimes the camera will be showing
someone's feet whilst dancing, but always on a straight level. They are mostly
relatively close up. The camera is always on the move, it doesn’t ever stop, this
gives it a flowing feel and give it energy. The camera is handheld, this will give the
watcher a feel of them actually being there amongst the action. There is one shot
that isn’t shown as a close up and this is gives a wider picture for the audience to
feel and understand the surroundings
6. Editing
• The editing is very inconsistent, some scenes change exactly on the
beat, and others change just in the middle. This is what most of
Martin Solveig videos are like, they are abstract and have very odd
scenes and are very random, this means that he can afford to not
concentrate as much on editing on time to the beat as he is known
for the abstract style of videos.
7. Intertextuality
• Recently, around the time the video was released, there was a large
popularity of drugs, especially legal highs. The video is all about
drugs, so therefore the artist has tried to link it to the popularity of
drugs.
8. Structure
•Intoxicated is an example of an
abstract music video. It has no
structure at all, and is made up
from a load of different random
videos, it has no story line at all.
9. Star Image/Brand
• Again, this video is an abstract. The artist has no apparent
star image or brand. He is just being himself.
10. Voyeurism
• In the video, there is one particular scene, which shows a female
wearing very little clothing. This attracts the eyes of the male
audience, especially those of the teenage years. The artist could be
attempting to grab the audiences attention at these particular ages as
his video is aimed at these target group, as the drugs use in youngers
years has become more popular, therefore Martin Solveig will do
anything to grab their attention
