3. Spokane river
• My topic is to clean the river.
• I am Aidan Maddox age 10, and
my team member is Michael
Gayvoronskiy.
• My school name is West Valley
City School the location is 8920 E
Valleyway Spokane WA 99212.
9. Why the problem is
important/challenging in
our community
It is an important problem because
animals and people need the water.
If the water is contaminated it
makes the animals sick and the
people sick who eat the animals
and who eat plants grown by
farmers who use it for irrigation.
It is a challenge because people
litter out of habit and habits are
hard to break.
12. Why you picked the
problem
•I drank water and then got E Coli
bacteria.
• Animals and humans are getting
sick.
• I would like to catch and eat fish
from the Spokane river.
15. How you researched the
problem
• I used the internet.
geographic/spokane/
spokane_river_basin.htm
• I surveyed the community.
• I read articles on the internet.
• I created a website that lists
some of the sources of pollutants
and easy solution for reducing
them.
18. What you learned from
the research
• I learned that the Spokane river
is the fifth worst river in the US.
• One part of the river was even
banned from use because of how
dirty it was.
• Carelessness has resulted in
phosphates, heavy metals, PCP,
drugs, hormones, etc getting into
the water.
19. Why the problem needs
to be fixed
• The problem needs to be fixed
because the wildlife and people
who rely on the river need a better
ecosystem.
• People aren’t aware that what
they dispose of in their toilets, on
the ground and in the river are
causing the Spokane River to be
unhealthy.
22. Proposed Solution
• Educate the public on the
dangers of drinking the water and
eating animals who drink the water
or foods grown using the water.
• Provide information on
alternatives to dumping
contaminates into the river, down
your toilets, or on the ground.
25. How proposed solution
will benefit community
•The data I collected in the survey
indicates that a number of people
don’t realize that what they do
causes pollution in the river.
• It will make a difference by
creating a good ecosystem.
• It will help the animals and the
people living by the Spokane river.
29. Why your investigation is
original, resourceful, or novel
• We are simply adding to an
amazing idea.
• My investigation is resourceful
because I am going one on one
with members of my community.
31. Investigation hypothesis
• I think we will be able to help
clean our river and hopefully get
people to litter and pollute less.
• Written in the format: “If we
show how easy it is to not liter then
they might stop littering because
they will find out how easy it is to
stop.”
32. Investigation materials
• 1. computer with internet access
2. information from the
department of ecology
3. paper for writing
4.pen or pencil
33. Investigation procedure
• 1. determine some of the
problems that can be solved by
regular people
• 2. Take a survey to see if people
are aware of the problem
• 3. Provide people with
information that would make them
aware how to avoid polluting and
why
35. Investigation data tables
• Explain how/why you created
the data table you did, and how you
chose which data went into which
columns and rows
