Single Cylinder Optical Access Research Engine




The technology of spark ignition engines is growing at an                            Contact Information

MAHLE        Powertrain's           optical   access    research   engine      was
developed with these objectives in mind. Having the ability to
capture and visually record the combustion process allows for
detailed comparative analysis to be carried out and provides the
opportunity for qualitative and quantitative measurements to be
taken. The initial work focus has been to support the validation of
CFD in-cylinder modeling using laser-based optical techniques
such as PIV (Particle Image Velocimetry) and LDA (Laser Doppler
Anemometry). This was followed by high-speed imaging of fuel
spray development and flame growth. Further projects are now
underway to gather the necessary data for thermodynamic analysis
and to investigate the influence of alternative fuels and variable
valve actuation systems on engine efficiency and exhaust
emissions.

Further projects are now underway to gather the necessary data for thermodynamic analysis and to investigate the influence of alternative fuels and variable valve actuation systems on engine efficiency and exhaust emissions.
