VDI Adoption Indications 2012

  1. 1. VDI Adoption Indicators Which way are they pointing? A very non-scientific review Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  2. 2. Purpose of this Deck– Provide a high-level view of an approach I use to get a consensus of the market at large– Provide my opinion of the current consensus based on my “read” of available data points– Share some of those data points– This deck is by no means conclusive but could be but one data point in itself Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  3. 3. VDI - IMO– VDI adoption is in an uptrend that will last 3-5 years– VDI has a number of benefits yet is not a fit for all use cases– VDI is but 1 piece of the desktop (or user device) virtualization story– VDI is a strategy for application compatibility and accessibility while applications make the slower than desired transition to web and/or cloud based availability– VDI has a finite life span – my best guess at this time is that in about 5 years we’ll see the peak Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  4. 4. Approach• Gather many data points• The more data points the better• A wide variety of data points is better• Assess data points as favorable, neutral or unfavorable?• What is the consensus? Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  5. 5. Data Points• Industry analysts – i.e. Gartner and IDC• Ecosystem Growth – startups and solutions• Industry News• Major Vendor News• Major Vendor acquisitions and partnerships• Sales and revenue numbers – when you can get them Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  6. 6. Industry Analysts But one analysis from Gartner on the subject. Gartner in general predicts steady VDI growth for the next 3-5 years Favorable Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  7. 7. Industry Analysts cont’d• IDC research shows that the virtual client computing market will grow from $2.3 billion in 2011 to over $3 billion by 2015, with nearly a third of that coming from the centralized virtual desktop market (also called VDI).• Total customer count is expected to continue to rise well into the second half of the decade.• As the solution matures, it will become increasingly applicable to greater portions of organizations and a greater breadth of industry verticals beyond the typical healthcare, finance, government, and education segments that dominate the market today.• IDC believes desktop virtualization growth has strong legs. Favorable Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  8. 8. Industry Analysts cont’dThat’s favorable Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  9. 9. VDI Ecosystem• Continued Growing List of solutions• Many proven and winning customer adoption• Examples: – Virsto, Atlantis, Pivot3, Nutanix, Unidesk – Virsto, V3, Tintri, Veloxum, Nexenta, DataCore – StorMagic, XtremIO, Violin, Nimble – And on and on – All of the above are either primarily oriented on VDI or have a VDI specific solution Favorable Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  10. 10. Acquisitions and Partnerships• I don’t need to go far this month.• Dell announced its intent to acquire Wyse• And• Dell announced DaaS offering based on Desktone’s platform• These type of activities do not happen without a LOT of analysis Super Favorable but I may be biased Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  11. 11. Dell Acquistion of Wyse Summary Bullets from IDC Acquisition Assessment 4/3/2012• On, April 2, 2012, Dell announced its intent to acquire Wyse.• Dell has been working over the past two to three years building out its client virtualization portfolio.• Dell can now match the spectrum of products offered by its major competition.• IDC sees this as a positive acquisition that will help better position Dell in the client virtualization marketplace.• IDC views the long-term play here is having the ability to offer complete end-to-end solutions to customers,. The additional functionality added to Dells overall offerings will ultimately make this acquisition successful. Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
  12. 12. Summary• While a small and short example, one can see how pulling together a variety of data points, assessing and determining a consensus is helpful for evaluating any market for directional indicators.• In this case, again IMO, the consensus is that VDI is experiencing increased adoption at an accelerated pace. Opinions are that of my own. Material created by others is identified as such.
