Privilege walk
1. Privilege Walk
Contrary to some Americans beliefs, “equality” is not yet
accomplished. This exercise proved that no matter what the law says
people are still being mistreated because of their race. You saw that most
people who took steps forward were white. Most who took steps back
were a different race than white. Yes, there was a mixture in the front
and back, but it was clear what was what.
This made me feel somewhat uncomfortable. Knowing that people
are still so close minded and stuck in the past is not something that us as
Americans, should be proud of. Seeing what others have to go through
just because of their race is a very sad thing. Most white people try and
vouch for heir behavior by saying “it is not my fault I’m white.” Which
is a correct statement, but it is also not their fault they are from another
ethnicity. So, yes this exercise mad me feel uncomfortable.
What I have learned is you need to treat everyone as an equal. If
one really wants to make a difference, then you will show to America
that you stand for equality. There are an abundance of things I have
learned from this activity. Of these lessons, one lesson stuck out to me.
It is the fact that I can walk away from these issues, but others are not
privileged enough to do the same. I can only hope one day that this will
stop.
My thoughts while doing this exercise were how privileged I am.
Knowing that some people went through, what they went through
irritates me. I feel as if everyone needs to do this exercise once just to
see what other are going through. It is harder for other ethnicities to do
some of the things I do on a normal basis. Go to work, go to school, go
to the grocery store is a struggle for them.
What I will do with this information in the future is try to raise
awareness as to what is really going on in America (the land of the free.)
Some are not as free as others. You can do this exercise with anyone.
2. And if they do not learn from it, the the cannot be taught. Racism is a
real issue in America. Something they can not be fixed over night.
Always remember, one person can make a differene.
