Planning and Researching involves three activities:
Define the rhetorical situation (The five W and How questions give you a sense of your rhetorical situation.)
Four elements of the rhetorical situation:
Subject – what is document about? What is the scope of the project?
Purpose – what is the document trying to achieve? Why do the readers need it? What do they need to know?
Readers – who are the readers? What are their needs and interests? What are they looking for?
Context of Use – where and when will the document be used? What constraints are there?
2. State your purpose – what you want to do and what you want your document to achieve

Recent research has identified interpersonal communication skills as critical attributes
for new employees and more experienced workers seeking promotion. However,
despite the significance of interpersonal communication in the workplace, our knowl-
edge of these skills and how they may be taught is limited. The two articles comprising
this theme section are intended to extend our understanding of these skills.
Nineteenth-century maps of the African continent—at least those printed in the
United States and Europe—contain a rather strange entry in the central section of that
land mass. If you consult one of these old maps, you will notice, south of the “Mountains
of the Moon” and north of the land of Moologa, a large territory labeled the
UNEXPLORED REGION. Apparently, there yet remained a portion of the continent
unoccupied by the soldiers and merchants of colonial powers.
The topic of this themed section, Interpersonal Communication in the Workplace,
also resembles a largely “unexplored region.” The reasons for our scanty knowledge
are complex. Certainly, it is not due to a lack of research: The two articles comprising
this section offer useful bibliographies concerning numerous studies examining the
people skills, the “soft” skills, and the personal skills often associated with interper-
sonal communication. Yet the studies fail to provide us with clear definitions of these
skills, their interrelationships, and their relevance to communication. In fact, much of
the cited research informs us that managers and human relations professionals main-
tain that “interpersonal skills” and communication represent two distinct sets of behav-
ior. It has proven difficult to explore the terrain of interpersonal communication when
we can’t agree on a common nomenclature with which to ask questions, frame hypoth-
eses, conduct studies, and report findings.

Communication is the ability to effectively, accurately, and succinctly convey a point through written or oral medium in a global environment.
Effective communication is characterized as use of the correct medium and style to share information.
Effective communication may also require visual aids. Accurate communication contains proper grammar and clear dialogue. Accurate communication is achieved through proofreading and rewriting. Succinct communication is important in a fast pace environment where ideas must be quickly exchanged (Quinn, 2014). Succinct communication may require lists and formatting to draw attention to important points. Communication occurs consistently and it is important to know the various aspects of this skill, starting with value in the workplace.

VALUE
IN THE WORKPLACE
Communication skills have value throughout the student's career path. A survey of executives placed communication ahead of other soft skills as an "extremely important" skill in today's workplace (Robles, 2012, p.455). Strong and well developed communication skills help establish credibility and build working relationships. The ability to verbalize understanding of one's job duties and to ask relevant questions provides a foundation for significant contributions. For example, a customer may call with a question, but not know the correct terminology to use.
The employee's ability to ask probing questions and decipher the customer's question is necessary for accurate resolution.
SKILL DEMONSTRATION
Strong communication skills are demonstrated via written and oral mediums. Written mediums include memos, e-mails, and business documentation. Oral mediums include telephone calls, meetings, and listening. The following paragraphs illustrate both mediums.
Strong written communication provides a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The written document should be able to stand alone from its writer to convey ideas and opinions. The tone should complement the subject material to highlight important areas or appropriately discuss sensitive topics. For example, a memo regarding changes in attendance policy should highlight to employees the importance of understanding the material, showing compliance with company policy.
Keen oral communication is highlighted by use of pace, tone, and word choice. Pace refers not only just to speed of discussion, but also to pauses that allow the participants to digest the message. Tone is important to convey the mood of the message. Messages that initiate change may include a tone of curiosity while messages that include consequences should have a serious tone. The choice of words is important depending on the audience. Within a group of peers jargon or acronym.

Teleconferencing adds to the verbal messaging mix. Special events encourage employee involvement and help boost morale.
Written messages include memos, both traditional forms and the modern hybrid formats widely used today, inter- and intradepartmental email, blogs, company newsletters and handbooks containing policy, procedures and codes of conduct and dress
Employee morale relates to feelings of importance and job satisfaction, and depends on communicating frequently and honestly with your workers
Write a three to four (3-4) page paper that addresses the following scenarios:
One of your employees is constantly late, leaving food and drinks at the work station, and you are forced to address the situation.
You need to let all employees know about a company special event.
You hear from a friend that a client is about to sign a contract with one of your present competitors.
You have three bids on a piece of equipment and you need to get a management decision on purchasing.
The format of the paper is to be as follows:
Typed, double-spaced, Times New Roman font (size 12), one-inch margins on all sides, APA format, a Microsoft Word document.
Use headers for each of the subjects being covered, followed by your response.
In addition to the three to four (3–4) pages required, a title page is to be included. The title page is to contain the title of the assignment, your name, the instructor’s name, the course title, and the date.
Note: You will be graded on the quality of your answers, the logic/organization of the report, your language skills, and your writing skills.

Workplace: A Largely
Unexplored Region

Recent research has identified interpersonal communication skills as critical attributes
for new employees and more experienced workers seeking promotion. However,
despite the significance of interpersonal communication in the workplace, our knowl-
edge of these skills and how they may be taught is limited. The two articles comprising
this theme section are intended to extend our understanding of these skills.
Nineteenth-century maps of the African continent—at least those printed in the
United States and Europe—contain a rather strange entry in the central section of that
land mass. If you consult one of these old maps, you will notice, south of the “Mountains
of the Moon” and north of the land of Moologa, a large territory labeled the
UNEXPLORED REGION. Apparently, there yet remained a portion of the continent
unoccupied by the soldiers and merchants of colonial powers.
The topic of this themed section, Interpersonal Communication in the Workplace,
also resembles a largely “unexplored region.” The reasons for our scanty knowledge
are complex. Certainly, it is not due to a lack of research: The two articles comprising
this section offer useful bibliographies concerning numerous studies examining the
people skills, the “soft” skills, and the personal skills often associated with interper-
sonal communication. Yet the studies fail to provide us with clear definitions of these
skills, their interrelationships, and their relevance to communication. In fact, much of
the cited research informs us that managers and human relations professionals main-
tain that “interpersonal skills” and communication represent two distinct sets of behav-
ior. It has proven difficult to explore the terrain of interpersonal communication when
we can’t agree on a common nomenclature with which to ask questions, frame hypoth-
eses, conduct studies, and report findings.

Communication is the ability to effectively, accurately, and succinctly convey a point through written or oral medium in a global environment.
Effective communication is characterized as use of the correct medium and style to share information.
Effective communication may also require visual aids. Accurate communication contains proper grammar and clear dialogue. Accurate communication is achieved through proofreading and rewriting. Succinct communication is important in a fast pace environment where ideas must be quickly exchanged (Quinn, 2014). Succinct communication may require lists and formatting to draw attention to important points. Communication occurs consistently and it is important to know the various aspects of this skill, starting with value in the workplace.

VALUE
IN THE WORKPLACE
Communication skills have value throughout the student's career path. A survey of executives placed communication ahead of other soft skills as an "extremely important" skill in today's workplace (Robles, 2012, p.455). Strong and well developed communication skills help establish credibility and build working relationships. The ability to verbalize understanding of one's job duties and to ask relevant questions provides a foundation for significant contributions. For example, a customer may call with a question, but not know the correct terminology to use.
The employee's ability to ask probing questions and decipher the customer's question is necessary for accurate resolution.
SKILL DEMONSTRATION
Strong communication skills are demonstrated via written and oral mediums. Written mediums include memos, e-mails, and business documentation. Oral mediums include telephone calls, meetings, and listening. The following paragraphs illustrate both mediums.
Strong written communication provides a clear introduction, body, and conclusion. The written document should be able to stand alone from its writer to convey ideas and opinions. The tone should complement the subject material to highlight important areas or appropriately discuss sensitive topics. For example, a memo regarding changes in attendance policy should highlight to employees the importance of understanding the material, showing compliance with company policy.
Keen oral communication is highlighted by use of pace, tone, and word choice. Pace refers not only just to speed of discussion, but also to pauses that allow the participants to digest the message. Tone is important to convey the mood of the message. Messages that initiate change may include a tone of curiosity while messages that include consequences should have a serious tone. The choice of words is important depending on the audience. Within a group of peers jargon or acronym.
