2. Zora Neale Hurston was born in
Notalsuga, Alabama on January 7, 1891.
Her parents were John Hurston and Lucy Ann
Hurston. They have eight children.
At three, the family moved to Eatonville, Florida.
In 1901, she discovered an interest in literature.
In 1904, her mother died and her father
immediately was remarried to Matte Morge.
3. As a teen, she was sent away to boarding
school until her parents no longer paid her
tuition.
In 1917, she began attending Morgan Academy
and graduated the next year.
In 1918, she attended Howard University for
undergraduate studies.
In 1925, she received a scholarship to Barnard
College where she was the only black student.
She received her B.A. in anthropology in 1927
at 36 years old.
