You Deserve a Medal
Medals are given to people for doing all sorts of brave things like fighting in wars, winning races,
or even discovering something new or unique. Think about your everyday life. What would you
receive a medal for? Would it be for keeping your room clean or remembering to brush your
teeth every morning? Maybe it’s even more important, like doing your best to get along with your
siblings, or make a friends’ day better. Think of something you’re proud of that you do or have
achieved. Why do you think you should get a medal? What would the medal look like?
Brainstorm your ideas on the back of this paper using the questions I provided for you before
starting your rough draft. After you answer the questions turn them into a paragraph about the
day you were a different age. Then have an adult help you edit your rough draft by looking for
capital letters, correct punctuation and grammar, spelling mistakes, and how well you stayed on
topic. Last, rewrite your paragraph in your neatest handwriting or type it up on the computer.
Make sure to turn in this sheet, your edited rough draft, and your final copy.
REMEMBER:
1. Sentences should start with a capital and end with a period, question mark, or exclamation
point.
2. A sentence should be a complete thought or idea. Your paragraph should have at least 6
sentences.
3. Strong sentences have vivid details.
4. Your paragraph should stay on topic and have a topic sentence, detail sentences, and a
concluding sentence. Don’t forget to indent!
5. All words should be spelled correctly. Have an adult proofread your paragraph before
turning it in.
Here’s an example of my paragraph:
If I were to receive a medal for an everyday activity it would be for always looking for new ways to
learn. I think I deserve a medal for learning because even though life gets busy and there are always a
million things to do, I find time to look for new ways to teach concepts or games to play so that I can help
my students succeed. I also love to learn new things to make for my home and family. This is important to
being a good teacher and mom because everyone loves doing new things and I love finding creative ways
to do them. I think I deserve this medal because it’s easy to do the same things every year in a classroom,
but it takes a lot more work to come up with innovative ways to do something so that it’s more interesting or
fun. I think my students and family would agree because they love it when we learn new things or do
something ordinary even a fun new way.
Turn to the back to fill out the organizer.
2. Think of three different reasons you should receive a medal and choose one you would like
to write about.
