2. INTRODUCTION
 Founded in 1993, Boulder Creek Academy is a year-round therapeutic
boarding school that caters to students with cognitive and social deficits.
Boulder Creek Academy holds membership with the National
Association of Therapeutic Schools and Programs (NATSAP).
According to NATSAP, therapeutic programs can be divided into six
unique categories. The following is a brief summary of each type of
program and its focus.
1. Boarding school - A full-time residential program typically lasting one
to two years. The amount of supervision and structure at a boarding
school is based on individual students’ needs. Boarding schools are also
capable of granting diplomas and academic credits.
2. Non-residential program - An outpatient program specializing in
community-based mentoring and treatment. Non-residential programs
may offer academic credits depending on accreditation status.

3. THERAPEUTIC PROGRAMS
 3. Small residential program - A program that utilizes an
intimate setting (fewer than 30 students) and often stresses life-
skills training and family involvement.
4. Residential treatment center - A highly structured
environment with an emphasis on behavioral support. Residential
treatment centers offer a combination of individual and group
counseling.
5. Transitional independent living program - Designed for young
adults aged 18 years and older. These programs tend to offer
educational programs at community colleges or local universities,
as well as volunteer-engagement opportunities.
6. Outdoor therapeutic program and wilderness program -
Combines therapeutic treatment with a natural environment.
Promotes self-sufficiency and healthy group dynamics.
