A small introduction to Mixbook — who we are, what we do, what technologies we use. And some info about the future of technologies, IT community in Moldova and some funny slides :)
Hi everyone! Thanks for having me here :)
I’m Kirill and I work with awesome people at Mixbook.
And I’d like to tell you a little bit about our company and our team.
WHAT IS MIXBOOK?
Mixbook is a powerful design tool to create fully customizable photo products like books, cards, calendars and wall canvases.
With Mixbook's free online editor, you're not limited to static pre-designed templates, you have the freedom to edit to your heart's content.
We've dedicated ourselves to bringing you the best experience in creating professional quality photo products that truly reflect your vision for years to come.
Company was started way back in 2006 and the first commits are in 2007 (10 years ago)
This video will give you a sense of what we do and how we do that!
Mixbook is focused on giving you the right tools to easily convert your photos into a state of art albums, postcards and photo books.
We’re constantly adding new products and updating our designs for our users to get the best looking products on the market
Our technological stack for back-end is Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
We’ve started the project 10 years ago, and are still faithful to those technologies.
Rails allow us to quickly prototype and create new parts of the website (comparing to other programming languages).
Also Ruby is easy to read, and ready to get started.
Our team consists of developers that came from different background - JavaScript, Python, Flex, PHP.
And it’s easy for them to jump start with Ruby and RoR, and that’s cool :)
For front-end we have to be using latest and fastest technologies to have the support of the community and have the most performant technologies to help us build and sustain our project.
Currently we are using React, Redux and Typescript. We also practice using functional programming both in back and front-end.
Please relax and check the process of creating our main website.
You will see project being started by Andrew and Aryk, our co-founders. Than Aryk takes the role of the main developer, and you can see him most of the time flying around and changing files.
After the product launch the team expanded and you can see more people joining the project — there are working on optimization, new features, fixes, writing tests and big “explosions” that you’ll see in the video - are adding new plugins and updating Ruby on Rails :)
There are 3 circles you’ll see constantly growing — tests, migration and assets.
Our back-end has around 60% test coverege ;)
This is Aryk - the cofounder of Mixbook.
On an event in Transilvania he made a presentation how Ruby helps him learn Russian.
His russian is acutally pretty good, he can read well and write and pronounce some stuff :)
He parsed several thousands most popular words, made an algorithm to take root of the word and made an excel table with words grouped by word roots.
Some of the words were very similar in English, so he also transliterated words them and grouped them, to get up to speed.
He also wrote a program for learning new words, by fetching sentence examples from Wikipedia and trying to match the words with meanings.
So to recap — Ruby is cool, it’s an old technologies and currently it’s not very popular.
But Rails is a very good framework that inspired many others in back-end and in front-end domains :)
There’s a big community, you can find answers to most of your questions and the code will run fast.
It’s also stable and has less security issues than some newer technologies.
But you should never stop on having learnt only one technologie.
Our team is good at everything — they can jump into any library and be experts in it in just a few weeks
And it’s cool to be a web developer (engineer)! :)
The possibilities are endless, new companies and technologies are appearing every day and more and more parts of our daily life becomes more dependent on web.
This event is supported by some of the best companies in Moldova (and not only) that are building the future right now.
Those companies know the importance of their technologies, their products and the people that work with them.
IT is not just a trend, speciality or a way to make money.
It’s a way of life, a community, a possibility to create anything you want from anywhere!
We are glad to be here and invest in you and your future, so maybe we can build the future together ;)
