Senior Design Chemical Engineering Capstone August 2015 – December 2015
 Researched appropriate reactor kinetics to drive the process toward a desired selectivity
and yield
 Determined the flowrate and type of coolant needed to prevent a runaway reaction from
occurring
 Designed heat exchangers to effectively transfer the energy needed to heat and cool
process streams
 Designed the network of heat exchangers to accurately fulfill energy needs which in turn
reduced costs of heating and cooling for entire process
 Design the size and specifications of distillation columns to reduce the energy
requirements needed for heating and cooling
 In addition to designing the different columns I also designed the system in which they
are arranged to optimize each column for the particular separation required
 Observe safety hazards and insure that proper precautions have been taken to regulate the
amount of waste being generated by the process
 Determine the capital costs necessary to run and maintain the facility
o This looks into as well the number of years necessary to repay initial investment
