In the same way, count
yourselves dead to sin
but alive to God in
Christ Jesus. Rom. 6:11
•Set apart for God’s use
•Set apart from SIN to
holiness
•This makes us
“SAINTS.”
May God himself, the God of
peace, sanctify you through
and through. May your whole
spirit, soul and body be
kept blameless at the coming
of our Lord Jesus Christ. (1
Thess. 5:23)
•PAST- Positional: have been
saved from the guilt and PENALTY
of sin
•PRESENT- Progressive: being
saved from the power of sin
•FUTURE- Final: will be saved
from the presence of sin.
Instantaneous
sanctification of the
SPIRIT the moment a
person trusts in Christ,
done once forever. Heb.
10:14
Heb. 10:14
For by one sacrifice He
has made perfect
forever those who are
being made perfect.
The believer has the perfect
righteousness of CHRIST
added to their moral and
spiritual “bank account.”
(Justification)
Rom. 4:18-24 Abraham
was counted as
righteous by faith; we
can be too by faith in
Jesus.
Rom. 5:21 God made
Jesus take our sin upon
Himself so we might be
given the righteousness
of Jesus.
The believer is also freed
from SLAVERY to the old
sinful nature, and can obey
God with the help of the
Holy Spirit. (Redemption)
Rom. 6:22
You have been set free
from sin.
The process by which a
believer becomes HOLIER
and more like Christ by the
sanctification of the SOUL
(mind and emotions) through
SUBMISSION to the Holy
Spirit and STUDY of the
Scriptures.
•This is a progressive
and GRADUAL work,
not instantaneous.
Sanctification depends
on total reliance on the
power of the Holy Spirit,
not any human EFFORT
to change.
Live a holy life,
separated from the
influence of the world
and worthy of your new
position as a child of
God.
We are to oppose the
influence of the
WORLD, the FLESH
and the DEVIL the
enemies of the soul.
WORLD
You used to live in sin,
just like the rest of the
world,
DEVIL
obeying the devil, the
commander of the
powers in the unseen
world. He is the spirit at
work in the hearts of
those who refuse to
obey God.
FLESH
All of us used to live
that way, following the
passionate desires and
inclinations of our sinful
nature.
• World- human philosophy,
humanism, pride
• Flesh- basic human desires
for evil, lusts
• Devil- A personal spiritual
enemy, who wants to destroy
us
We are to resist
TEMPTATION.
It is not a sin to be
tempted; it is a sin to
YIELD.
God ALLOWS his
children to be
tempted.
We are to watch for it
and pray to ESCAPE
it.
We are to avoid people
and situations that
lead to it.
We are to be
transformed by the
renewing of our minds.
We are to resist
temptation with
Scripture, like Jesus.
We are to yield
ourselves to God.
We are to “reckon”
ourselves dead to sin;
unresponsive.
We are to watch for a
way of ESCAPE and
take it.
Respond immediately to
the conviction of the
Spirit.
Successfully resisting
temptation makes us
stronger.
We can still SIN and we
will behave in ways
contrary to our
salvation when we yield
to our old human
nature.
We are involved in a
spiritual BATTLE
between our “old man”
and our new, Spirit-led
nature.
When we sin, God
does not abandon or
judge us. God will
forgive us when we
confess our sin to Him.
