Editor's Notes
During the research and planning stages we used a variety of new media technologies to gather information about similar products and our own music video and song. Our group decided to use a filmed interview with half of the band. We did this to find out what the band was like and to find out what type of message they want to send from the video and what their musical tastes are so we could relate the video to bands of a similar genre. By using a filmed interview instead of just a simply questionnaire it gave us a deeper response from the people being interviewed. Instead of having a choice of responses by doing it in a moving image format it gave the people talking more freedom to respond to the questions and also by seeing how the band responded to the questions showed us what type of people they were which could then be incorporated into the mood of the video. Another benefit of using a filmed interview was we could gather information from things like facial expression and the type of people the band were which couldn’t be shown on a response to a questionnaire. We used audio responses to hear feedback from people who had heard the song. Once again by using a recorded response instead of a questionnaire it allowed the consumer to describe what the song made them feel instead of the group listing some responses and the interviewee picking one. This means the response was a lot more specific and by asking a range of ages and types of people it gave the group a varied response to what the band was like and how the song made the consumer feel.
During the research phase when the group were gathering information and conventions of music video’s, which were of a similar genre, we sometimes put a link straight from the Blog to youtube. This allowed us as a group to access the music videos very easily in case we had to go back and analyse further. Also for anybody accessing the Blog it allows the reader to go straight to the video and see what conventions the group have commented on during the music video, so it makes the Blog more fluent.
Photos also were a good technology to use within our planning phase as instead of the group trying to describe the types of location we were going to use we could provide an accurate picture of the type of location we would be using to show the viewers of the Blog. Also by using pictures of the album covers and magazines we used it allowed the group to analyse the products from the Blog and not have to keep switching between a picture and the Blog, it also allowed us to show the viewers of the Blog what we had been analysing.
The actual format of the Blog helped through every part of the coursework. We used the Blog to show every part of our research, planning and also to show this evaluation so it was a vital tool during all of the coursework. The benefits of having a Blog to show the information were firstly it was a lot easier to work as a group as the Blog allowed the group to see each other’s work and see what needed doing to finish every stage of the coursework. Secondly because the Blog allows all different types of technology to be put on it, it allowed the group freedom in what technology to put into the coursework for example moving image or links to websites.
During the creation of the music video and the ancilary products we used many different types of technology to get the best possibly result. For the music video we decided to use I Movie. We chose this because it is simply to use and our music video didn’t require any complex editing. It also has a range of editing transitions to use and still creates a high level of film although it is not a complex as final cut. Final cut would have been the best choice if our film was very complex and required more unusual types of editing and filming but because our video had a very indie stereotypical video of a story line and the band playing we decided to choose I movie.
We used Fireworks CS3 to create the ancillary tasks. We chose this software because it had all the required elements we needed such as; layers, magic wand tool and image manipulation, also because we had some prior knowledge with this software which was a good base to use. We learnt more about the software by looking at tutorials which showed use how to use the software efficiently and correctly to get the effect we wanted. Using this software benefited us greatly as we had planned to use Fireworks as we already had some knowledge, and secondly it allowed us to manipulation and create the desired effect we wanted. We also downloaded a variety of fonts which we tried and tested until we decided on one font, we did this as the pre-installed fonts were not suitable as they did not match the rest of the product, and we had to ensure the product as a whole looked as we wanted to give the right representation. The online cartoonizer we used allowed us quickly manipulate the image into a cartoon, which on Fireworks would have taken hours and was above our expertise. This benefited us by giving us the desired effect in minutes and this is much more efficient.
