1. Discovering Web Widgets

When I first heard of web widgets, I did not know exactly what they were. I did a little research, and as it turns
out I have been exposed to them over and over again on the internet and never realized what they were
called. Basically a web widget is a little piece of code that is installed into a webpage, blog, or any other
website application that captures your attention and tells you something the designer wants you to know.
Usually, these pieces of code make the page your user is viewing more exciting, colorful, and they capture
their attention.
The reason I first came across the term web widget is because I wanted to put a countdown on my blog for my 21st birthday. I had
been sharing the dreams of the night I turned 21 with all of my readers and pretty much everyone was excited for my big day. I started
counting down the day after I turned 20, and I updated everyone pretty regularly about how many days I had left. I wanted to invite all
of my closest readers and friends to my big day, but I thought I needed something to be flashing at them and capturing their attention
so they could all keep that night free. So, I started looking into what those little flashing things were called that captured my attention
on other web pages. The answer to this question, I found out were web widgets.
After I found out what web widgets were, I wanted to find out what all exactly they could do and how to create web widgets. I found
out they can do a lot more than just countdowns. They can be advertisement widgets, feed widgets, playlist widgets, and so much
more. I found out that all I had to do in order to create web widgets was copy and past the code of my desired web widget onto my
blog where I wanted it to go. I did not have to download anything and it barely took any time at all. It was super easy.
After I found out just how easy web widgets are to install onto my blog, I got a little bit web widget crazy. When I went on to design my
own web page I started putting web widgets onto it all over the place. Unfortunately, I found out that these applications are not always
a good thing. Sometimes, they can carry viruses and if you have too many your users can think your site looks a little too flashy or like
you are trying to hard. After I heard back from of few of my visitors, I took down a few of the web widgets I did not necessarily need.
Anyways, my first web widget was a huge success. All of the people on my blog loved my widget and asked me how they too could
start putting web widgets on their web pages. The best thing about my countdown widget was that it did exactly what I wanted it to.
My blog friends got excited counting down with me and on the night I finally did turn 21, so many of them showed up. Some of them I
had never even met before, and it was awesome getting to know them. Most of them told me that if it hadn?t been for my flashing web
widget countdown, they might have forgotten. But, because of web widgets, they didn?t and my party was a huge success!
