An attorney, who is a member of the District of Columbia Bar, Binta Robinson has enjoyed travel and her travel destinations have included several countries in Europe and as well as travel to Hawaii. In Hawaii, Binta Robinson explored the Big Island, which is home to several active volcanoes. The entire chain of Hawaiian Islands was created from volcanic eruptions, but only the Big Island and Maui still have volcanic potential. Two of the Big Island’s six volcanoes are inactive or dormant, with extinct Mahukona never breaching the surface of the ocean. The other three volcanoes, Mauna Loa, Kilauea, and Hualalai are still active, but the latter has not erupted since 1801. Mauna Loa, last erupting in 1984, is the largest active volcano in the world. It extends 2.5 miles above the earth’s surface and three miles below the surface and is so heavy that it has depressed the ocean floor another 5 miles. This gives the volcano a height of more than 10 miles from its base. Kilauea, the most active volcano in the world, is less than a thousand years old and has erupted 36 times in the past 70 years. Last erupting in 2018, the volcano added 1 square mile to the island’s size with its most recent eruption.
