1. The Window
Scene 1 (Int)
This scene begins with titles over a black screen and the audience can hear the dialogue of two men.
'Is it time?'
'We have five minutes'
We then see a nurse burst through a hospital door into a bedroom with two men lying on separate beds both lying down. Both men smile and the nurse smiles back and roles her eyes then and the man closest to the window up in his bed so that he is sitting up right. The man sitting up right begins to describe what he can see outside the window including people and weather. The other man seems to get great pleasure out of this and they both giggle and talk. The intention of this scene is to establish characters and present a routine in which these men live their boring lives in hospital.
Scene 2 (Int)
At this point there will be a montage showing how regimented these two men’s lives is and how they seem to treasure the one hour a day in which the man next to window sits up and describes what he can see. This montage will show time passing and the nurse coming in every day to help them. There will be a song playing over this montage as well as dialogue each day as he describes different things that he can see.
Scene 3 (Int)
In this scene we see the man who has to lie down begin to become jealous and instead of looking happy as the man by the window describes what he can see instead he looks angry and looks away. Perhaps he imagines himself sitting by the window and we can show this in a dream like way. However he begins to be unfriendly to the other man for example he could say 'can you please stop rubbing it in my face that you get to see the world and I don't'. The intention of this scene is to show how things begin to change in the hospital from a happy environment to a resentful jealous atmosphere. The lighting will begin to darken in this scene. This will suggest to the audience that something bad is about to happen.
Scene 4 (Int)
This scene will take place in the middle of the night and the only light we see will be the moonlight shining out of the window, which will look effective, as the window is the main focus of the story. We will see the man furthest from the window not sleeping with an angry and frustrated expression on his face looking over at the man by the window with pure jealously. We will then see the man by the window begin to cough heavily and struggle in his bed and he will try to reach for the button by the side of the bed but can not reach it. A close up shot will show the man furthest from the window look at the button by the side of his bed and contemplate pressing it. However he doesn't and we watch as the man by the window slowly dies. The purpose of this scene is to show how jealousy and greed can drive someone mad. This is the climax of the story.
Scene 5 (Int)
This scene will take place the morning after the death and we will see the other man being wheeled away from the bedroom. The nurse will be making the bed by the window when the other man asks
'Would it be possible for me to be moved next to the window?'
'Yes why not' says the nurse
We see the nurse switch the beds around. The man props himself up on his elbows and a close up shot shows the hopeful expression on his face. A medium shot would then show the window and simply a brick wall outside. This will be the last scene and will present a powerful message. Classical somber music will play as the shot of the window zooms in and cuts to fade.
