2. The beginning
The very first horror film was
the dancing skeleton.
Horror started in the 1920’s
and begun as a silent movie,
they were thought to be gothic
literature. Spirit photography
was used most (certain things
within photography that make
there seem as if there are
ghosts).
3. 1930’s
Sound was introduced to films and had
a big impact on the horror genre as now
they could add monsters that growled
instead of just using ghosts and death
masks for effect.
Horror films were believed to be
fairytales as they were usually set in a
far off land e.g. Dracula and
Frankenstein
Horror was a popular genre because it
took peoples minds of Depressions and
the war which was nearing.
5. 1950’s
Monsters in horror films had changed
and their faces had been altered to a
more human form and more attached to
evil.
Horror films incorporated science and
technology which ran riots, this
demonstrated the worry their was for the
pace of technological change.
Horror became less popular and
musicals were storming in, all the big
stars were reserved purely for musicals.
Teenagers were the main viewers for
horror, they watched these at drive ins.
6. 1960’s
Sex and violence begun to be incorporated
in horror films, this made horror films more
believable as they faced issues in the
changing world.
The drive in teenagers from from the
1950’s had grown up and wanted
believable films therefore horror was just
as popular.
7. 1970’s
Horror movies returned to using a
big budget instead of a small
budget as times got depressing
again.
The Exorcist was released.
Horror movies begun
incorporating the fear of children a
lot.
Horror movies also incorporated
the idea of the crumbling family
(e.g. in the shining the dad was
the murderer and in the omen the
little boy was evil)
8. 1980’s
Visual effects were used which
benefited horror movies well.
Visual effects were used
excessively to show gory images
and when used too much they
made the film lose ability to scare
and shock.
Body parts were often incorporated
and this showed humans
fascination with out own insides.
9. 1990’s
Horrors usually involved psychos
and psycho scenarios.
Horrors used serial killers.
Horrors were said to use true
stories which involved serial killers
however they were most likely
based on true events.
10. 2000’s
Many were against horror after
9/11 after fear of global
convergence , this is because in
1990’s horror films predicted
terrible things to happen to the
Earth (which they did) however
horror was more popular than
ever.
Psychos from the 1990s went a
they were too much of a reminder
of Bin Laden in the media as he
was labeled as a mad man.
