● the basic point or main idea that you will prove in your
writing
● an arguable assertion; not a fact
● directly answers the task or question asked of you
● It’s the CLAIM of your entire essay!
● All academic essays must have a thesis statement!
3. A Good Thesis Statement...
● addresses the prompt clearly
● makes a claim or presents an argument
● is arguable (an opinion)
● is located in the introductory paragraph of an essay
