1. A2 - MEDIA PROPOSAL
PREPARED BY BEN & J’S TELEVISION

PREPARED FOR MR.CLARK
Media Proposal: Ben & J’s: On Gangs (Canford Heath edition)
+ Ancillary tasks
3. Treatment & Target audience
For out A2 Media course, we have decided that we wish to create
a documentary which focuses on the small amount of antisocial
behaviour among groups in our local area. The documentary will
follow the fictional history of two minor gangs (The Canford
Heath Crew and 2Keys) who have been at each other's throat for
a better part of a decade. We will look to explore the motives
behind this imaginary conflict via interviews and visits to the local
area; as well as finding out the implications of a victory for either
side. This will be paired with a radio advertisement for the
documentary along with a newspaper double page spread as our
ancillary texts. In turn we hope to tell the audience about the
children out being antisocial on the street.
We are using the documentary style because, through
completing our AS Level coursework, we can still utilise the skills
that we have gained while, at the same time, still have the
opportunity to apply them to a different formatting. In addition,
the term 'documentary' automatically connotes a sense of
professionalism a seriousness - something that is required when
dealing with such a sensitive subject. Yet, alongside this, we also
wish to straddle the line between severity and humour (thus the
reason we have created our own fictional backstory for the two
groups). This because it will help us convey the ultimate message
of how stupid such cultures can be and, in turn, how gangs and
vandalism are never the best option.
The message:
Our message is to try and underline the problems that are
happening in the local area related to anti-social behavior by
making it humorous which will be more affective to our
audience.
At these early stages, it is still difficult to determine our target
market (as this my change through the course of planning).
However, we feel that our documentary may well appeal to
people (of both genders) aged from 18 to 40. This is because,
by this age, most individuals will be mature enough to talk
about topics such as antisocial behaviour and, in turn, will
hopefully be able to understand the message that comes with
the product. In addition, we also feel that this documentary
might be better suited to members of a C2DE class because, in
some more deprived areas, antisocial behaviour is a real issue.
This means that these people are likely more opinionated on
the matter and, therefore, will remain better engaged with
the programme.
To get a larger understanding, we will be producing surveys in
the local area and looking at local demographics of our local
area, to see a break down of class percentages so see the
dominate class. Predicted: C2DE (Working class – potential
target audience)
Projected Target Audience
C2DE 80%
Other social
classes 20 %
4. Roles, Cast & Crew
Roles within our group
Since the idea was mine and Jordan's, it was only right
that we took the lead and the main jobs within the
group. For that reason, we are both the directors for
our documentary. As well we will be taking editing and
cinematography roles, so that we can develop skills in
these areas.
CREW:
Directors: Ben and Jordan
Producers: Ben and Jordan
Script: Ben
Editing: Ben & Jordan
Camera: Francis, Jordan
Sound: Guy and Jamie, Ben & Jordan
CAST & EXTRAS:
Ben as himself
Jordan as himself
Tom as Resident Crime Expert Ruff McTuffin
Jamie as Touchline reporter Geoff, Frank current CHC
Guy as John, ex-CHC, Viin Lye
Michael as the victim
Extras:
Jamie
Guy
Travis
We enlisted the help of Francis, Jamie and Guy as they
are all very talented and skilled, in-front and behind
the camera. We also got to learn how to use certain
equipment that they used. Such as a boom
microphone and HDR Camera. Guy is an extremely
talented actor who can play a wide range of
characters, for example he played both an ex criminal
and a Stereotypical Vietnamese farmer. Francis has
hundreds of pounds worth of equipment for
production and he is very technically experienced, he
said he would help aid us in production as well as the
majority being filmed by us.
We wanted to include the professionalism of Tom in
our video and felt the role of 'crime expert' was
perfect for him. Jamie has a lot of experience
presenting and being the main character in videos for
we wanted to him his screen presence utilized in our
video, we gave him his own segments as our touchline
reporter.
Why did we chose these roles?
We chose these roles to help set everyone in within
their preference and a place which they can be
efficient when under going the role.
5. Equipment and resources
Props
In our main product we will be using a variety of props for different roles and scenes. For our
Historic scene of verity we will be trying to make our own musket replicas. A lot of the
scenes will be set up with props to set the scene. This can be anything from cups, phones,
paper and folders. To get some of these props we will be contributing our own money to
purchase and will be asking the help of woodcraft men to help us process our own props.
This will be a very cost efficient way of getting the props we desire while on a budget.
Brief props for usage
-Musket replica (wooden prop) - for the historic battle scene
-A small rubber knife - 7 year war search
-Office supplies and folders - interviews
-Watering can - Viin Lyee scene
-Flowers and weeds - Viin Lyee scene
Cost and raising capital
To raise money to make our documentary we will try and raise some starting capital to buy
props and audio equipment, this is still undergoing decision but we are hoping to raise
money through cake sales and car washes for the school. Or we could possibly chip in up to
£30 each to get £90 in a start up fund which then we have only £20 to raise to afford for the
equipment and services.
Costume
For the majority of the project the main cast will be dressed in smart wear, but with other
scenes there will be extras dressed in very typical sports clothing. Thought costume is scene
specific.
Verity scenes
7 year war (the non-fiction gang war not the North American one in the 1700's):
This scene is the start of outside shots in verity park, this will been presented by Ben and
Jordan will the input from Guy who will play the ex-CHC member there.
Costume needed:
3 x Suits - Which we have already - For Ben, Jordan and Guy.
1x Snap back - for Guy's character
Historic battle scene.
The scene will be filmed in woodland, and extras and actors will be hopefully wearing 1700
Century clothing. Hopefully Redcoat uniforms.
Costumes needed:
3 British Redcoat uniforms
1 British Sargent uniform
5 hoodies + causal jeans and trainers
Farm scenes (green house scenes)
Establishing and natation of Viin Lyee's farm scene
The scene is simply Viin (Guy) telling us how he was pushed out from his patch in verity to
now working and living within an abandoned green house facility in a local school.
Costume needed:
1x Japanese Rise farmer hat - Viin
2x different colour hard hats - Ben and Jordan
3x Smart suits - 1x will be a mix and match suit for Viin
Interviews
The interview scenes are formal; Ben and J will be wearing smart cloths. The people that are
being interviewed will be dressed different.
John - Will be wearing a smart suit with a snap back
Frank - Hoodie, snap back and shirt and tie.
Production equipment
We will hopefully be using the following in the production of our project:
Cannon DHR - Recording Equipment
Wireless Clip on mic - Audio Equipment
Tripod - Stabilizer
Boom mic - Audio Equipment
and maybe the possibility of using Ringwood equipment
Post-Production equipment
We hope to purchase and use Cyberlink; PowerDirector 13 for the editing, though this may
change as that it is not final as that better editing equipment may be provided by the school.
Item Amount of equipment Cost (£)
Wireless Microphones 2 – Physical 18.99
Musket Replicas 4 – Physical 0-30
Cyberlink: PowerDirector
13
1 – digital copy 49.99
Recoat uniforms 3 - Physical 15-45
Total 106.48
*Note that these are predicted costs, they may change through the project*
Predicted cost of resources
*Roles and actors may be updated throughout the project*

6. Main and extra ancillary tasks
For our ancillary tasks we have chosen to take the two
page spread and radio advertisement media. We’ve
chosen these in particular so that we can make and
develop a range of media that we haven’t tried before,
in turn, improving and teaching us new skills in these
media areas. This will help the group if we decide to
take further media at university level. We also think
that these two media topics are a nice way to
advertise and will be very useful in our small media
campaign so that it targets our audience.
Idea for our ancillary tasks
We want our spread to also have a poster and then
under that would be a brief explanation of what the
show is about. As well as explaining why the television
production was created. There will be a vast amount
of promotional material as well exclusive interviews
with producers and actors.
