Skellig Michael is a mountainous island off the coast of Ireland famous for its appearance in Star Wars. It has the largest bird colony in Ireland with over 4,000 puffins. Skellig Michael was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1996 due to its unique early Christian monastery built on pyramidal rock in the ocean, which illustrates the extremes of monasticism. The monastery survived Viking raids in the 9th century and was expanded around the year 1000. It was inhabited by approximately 12 monks and an abbot who obtained fish, shellfish, eggs, and vegetables for sustenance. because when we arrived at the island
we did not know very well what there

it is an exceptional, and in many ways unique,
an example of an early religious settlement
deliberately located on a pyramidal rock in the
ocean, preserved thanks to its remarkable
natural environment. It illustrates, like no other
place, the extremes of a Christian monasticism
very characteristic of North Africa, the Middle
East and Europe.

4. What happened

The monastery of Skellig Michael survived
several Viking raids in the 9th century,
especially in 823. Around the year 1000 was
significantly extended, one of the two oratories
being reformed to become a chapel dedicated to
St. Michael the Archangel. Apparently, the
monastic community of Skellig Michael was
never very large: it probably consisted of about
12 monks and an abbot. It is believed that his
diet consisted of fish and shellfish obtained on
the island's coast, vegetables and eggs of
seabirds.
