2. THE BRIEF
The outcome of this brief is to create an animated GIF with up to 24 frames, with the theme of
‘surprise’ as a focal point. It can be as short as 2 frames, looped.
By means of researching existing gifs I find interesting and attending PS sessions for GIF making
and inDesign sessions for storyboarding I’ll create an outcome.
3. INITIAL IDEAS
The gif we make needs to be based on the keyword ‘surprise’. The surprise can be within the narrative of
the gif, or the elements such as colour or timing of the gif.
I jotted down some ideas as I went through the brief the first time and we looked through some gifs.
Element of colour – wizard of oz effect (pop of colour)
A ball that flies instead of falling off a surface
A coffee cup that’s actually full of colour when you ‘look’ into it
Sushi that get poked with chopsticks then smile
Stop motion with a doll moving towards camera then a real hand taking it to the background again,
repeat
Travel through an ear to their brain then their brain is full of colour / trip
A park scene with an octopus cropping out of the lake
Teletubbies with their tummies spelling out swear words amongst noise/static
Stop motion of a toilet roll with a vertical story drawn on
A gift box opening to reveal a puppy then turns into a demon
4. GIFS
GIFs can be used in Facebook messenger as a
means of replying and communicating with friends.
They take up less storage than videos
They can be made fairly easily from youtube videos
into mp4 conversion sites, and GIPHY and other
sites
Could be made using stop motion
Boomerang on insta
5. Illustrative gifs
My first thought when given the brief was Helen
Green’s gif of David Bowie. It was used by Sky Arts
when they were promoting some Bowie
documentaries a few years ago. The gif is made up of
individually drawn pictures of Bowie made by Helen
Green in her stylized manner.
