Workplace Health and Safety
Healthier and safer working environment is always appreciated. Getting hurt at work or
becoming ill through work is not a pleasant subject to think about; there are millions of people
who die everyday due to accidents or work-related diseases. It is generally considered that
management system of health and safety not only reduces loss and cost of accidents and ill-
health, but it also improves the performance and efficiency of employees and the residents that
we employees work with. The mistake is to believe that these things happen in highly unusual or
exceptional circumstances that never occur in your workplace. This is not the case. Some basic
thinking and acting beforehand can usually prevent these things from happening. Implementing
health and safety measures doesn’t have to be expensive, time consuming or complicated. In fact,
safer and more efficient working practices can often save money but, more importantly, they can
help to save lives. Achieving and maintaining excellent health and a safe work environment is an
ongoing process.
My intension on writing this paper is to look on the following some strategies on staying healthy
and maintaining a safe workplace and these are:
Observations of Daily Living
2. Observations of daily living are patterns and realities of daily life including but not limited to
diet, physical activity, quality and quantity of sleep, pain episodes and mood. Personal health
depends partially on one's active, passive, and assisted observations about their health in their
everyday life. The information gleaned from such observations may be used to inform personal
decisions and actions, for example a tenants who feel tired getting out of bed in the morning or
will sleep late into the morning because they were up in the most part of the night using the
bathroom. This information can be use to decide whether such a tenant or tenants should stop
drinking after supper so as to reduce their bathroom usage at night and therefore enabling them
to sleep better. Information from observation of daily living can also be use in clinical decision
and treatment (e.g tenant who notices his shoes are tighter than usual may be having
exacerbation of left-sided heart failure, and may require diuretic medication to reduce fluid
overload) for patients who share their observations with their health care providers.
Social Activity
Our personal health depend on the social structure of our lives so the maintenance of strong
social relationships is linked to good health conditions, longevity, productivity, and a positive
attitude. Studies have shown that positive social interaction as viewed by the participant
increases many chemical levels in the brain which are linked to personality and intelligence
traits. Our tenants should be encourage to have more interaction with the community through
activities like doing paid jobs or volunteering. This helps them to take their mind off their
troubles, give them something to look forward to and also keeping them away from spending too
3. much time watching television. There is a saying that goes thus “An ideal mind is the devil’s
workshop” so keep them busy and out of trouble.
Hygiene
Hygiene is the practice of keeping the body and the surroundings clean to prevent infection and
illness, and the avoidance of contact with infectious agents. We as staff need to teach our clients
the importance of hygiene to ourselves and surroundings so that when they move out of this
facility and to their own houses in the community they well are prepared to handle these
challenges. The basic hygiene practices they need to know include bathing, brushing and
flossing teeth, washing hands especially before eating, washing food before it is eaten, cleaning
food preparation utensils and surfaces before and after preparing meals, and many others. This
will help prevent infection and illness to themselves and others in the community the live in.
Taking a shower (bath) daily or three times a week keeps the body clean and odor free, dead skin
cells are washed away with the germs, reducing their chance of entering the body. “Cleanliness is
next to Godliness” so lets make our workplace next to Godliness.
Workplace wellness programs
Health and wellness in the workplace is crucial to the success of this company. Workplace
wellness programs are recognized by an increasingly large number of companies for their value
in improving the health and well-being of their employees and tenants alike, and for increasing
morale, loyalty, and productivity. When people are satisfied with their job, they are more
productive and tend to be healthier. When employees feel that the environment at work is
4. negative, they feel stressed and stress has a large impact on employee mental and physical
health, and in turn, on our clients or tenants. Workplace wellness programs can include things
like onsite fitness center, health presentations, wellness newsletters, tobacco cessation programs.
