area in California. Neither of their parents are divorced and
they have been married for 25 years. They are in their middle
adult stage of life and have two children. The children are in
college and work part time. Both of the parents work full time.
The father has Type II diabetes. Each individual is employed or
a full time student and functions independently.

a. How many times do you participate in regular health exams?
Wife and daughter get all routine health visits. Father and son
do not go to the doctor regularly. Father gets yearly eye and
dental exam. Father takes Metformin for his diabetes.
b. How do you describe your general state of health? They
describe themselves as physically a healthy family but very
busy.
c. What prescribed medications do you take? Father takes
Metformin
2. Nutrition
a. Where are most of your meals consumed? The family shares
very few meals together since they are so busy with school and
work.
b. How often in a week do you eat out verses eating at home?
Eat out or order food to take home four days a week. Eat home
cooked meals three times a week. Children are not overweight.
Father is slightly overweight.
c. What kind of foods do you regularly eat? Pizza, sandwiches,
soda and coffee.

a. How many hours a night do you and the family sleep? The
family reports sleeping 6-8 hours per night. Father works night
shift and gets less sleep then the others.

and daughter go to sleep early and rise early. Son goes to bed

jobs and work on computers. The children state they are on the
computer or watch TV 6-8 hours a day due to homework.

the show, dinner or take weekend trips for fun.

a. How does the family get information about health care? They
get their information about health care from their primary care
physician or the internet.
b. What is the usual family reading pattern? Daughter reads 4
hours a day. Son reads only when necessary for school.
Parents do not read at home only at work.
c. How do the family members recognize signs and symptoms of
deteriorating health? They know that they need to go to the
doctor when they have a fever or pain.
7. Sensory Perception
a. Do you see your family following the same traits as past
generations? Mother says that yes she sees the family following
9. the same traits as she likes to cook like her mother. The father
thinks that their family is much different then way he grew up
and disagrees.
b. What communication techniques do you use in your family?
They text each other, or call on cell phones. If they are in the
same room they will talk to one another but not very often.
c. How does your family show their affection? The family
states that they are not affectionate with one another. Mother
disagrees with the family; she states that she tells her family
that she loves them all the time.
8. Self-Perception
a. Describe your outlook on life? (hopeful, doubtful or
hopeless) The family reports that they are all hopeful and have
a positive outlook on life.
b. What kind of feelings do family members have for one
another? The family reports that they love one another but get
frustrated with one another also.
c. How does the family deal with stress and crisis situations?
The family reports to having greater stress with the down turn
of the economy and decreased income, however, they feel as
though they are doing okay. They talk or yell at each other
when they have a stressful event.
9. Role Relationships
a. Do you feel your role in the family is a healthy one? The
family reports that they have a healthy role in the family except
the son, he feels left out at times.
b. When participating in family discussions or disagreements,
do you feel your opinions are acknowledged? Yes they feel
their opinions are acknowledged. The family participates in
open discussions and allows for different opinions and discusses
the best way to solve them together.
c. Who is employed outside the home? All family members are
employed outside their home.

a. How does the family address family planning? The family
did not want to discuss this topic. They state they have
religious reasons for not discussing.
b. Openly about talking about sexuality within the family?
Daughter states that she can talk to her mother if she has any
questions about sexuality or sexually transmitted diseases.
They do not regularly talk about sexuality within the family.
c. Do you approach relationships with safe practices in mind?
The children are not in relationships and prefer not to answer.
11. Coping Stress tolerance
a. How does the family cope with stressful situations? The
Smith family divides on this topic. The mother and daughter
feel like they deal with stressful situations by communication.
The father and son yell and prefer not to discuss it. However
they report that they do not have very many.
b. What stressful situations has the family experienced? The
father lost his job of 15 years due to the economic recession.
They all pulled together and the two children both got jobs to
help out. They report that the father was unemployed for 1
year.
c. What values or beliefs help you make daily decisions? The
family reports that their faith and religion has helped them with
making decisions. The parents feel that they have made bad
decisions in the past and those bad choices taught them very
important lessons in life. The parents state that it is important
to instill these values in their children, however, they still allow
for them to make their own mistakes. They feel that it is
through these mistakes that one learns consequences of their
actions.
