2. Heart Failure
Chronic Disease
A cardiac disorder that impairs the ability of heart
to pump sufficient amount of blood through the
body
2
3. Diagnosis
Different techniques to identify heart failure -
Imaging, Chest X-rays, Electrophysiology and
blood tests
There is no gold standard diagnostic criteria.
Commonly used systems - Framingham criteria
and Duke criteria
When HF is diagnosed the heart has lost its
pumping capacity at least for a while
5. Data Source and Methods
Data were obtained from National Hospital Discharge
Survey from the National Center For Health Statistics
web site in Atlanta Georgia, USA
2005 survey year was selected for analysis
Sample records were selected that included principle
diagnosis code (ICD-9-CM) for heart failure (428.xx)
SPSS and Excel were used for all analysis and graph
Only frequency distribution was used for findings
5
6. Results
10275 sample records were initially selected using
diagnosis code 428.xx
They represent 1,084,133 discharges annually in the US
from Acute Care Hospitals in 2005
High frequency in secondary diagnosis were indentified
among the heart failure patients
Diabetes 31.6%, Hypertension 35.7%, Cardiac
Dysrhythmias 37.4% Ischemic H Disease 35.5%
Same diagnosis found in different diagnosis field of a
patient was considered a single diagnosis.

10. Conclusion
Patients admitted from Heart Failure had associated
disease diagnosed
Other diagnosis may be considered as an indication of
heart failure as the heart failure do not have a gold
standard of diagnosis
Combination of associated disease has a complex
relation specially in death of heart failure patients
Further analysis should be done to find out association
of these associated disease and relation with the
outcome of death of heart failure patients
