· Primaries narrow down candidates for general
elections
·The major parties compete to create the
strongest party possible
· There are many types of primary elections
amongst our 50 states
3. Types of Primaries
● Closed – Only members of a certain party vote
● Open – Voters choose party to vote for on
election day. (Ohio holds this kind of primary)
● Non partisan – No party classification, all
candidates on one ballot aka “blanket
primary”
● Presidential – Possible presidential candidates
compete, top 2 voter getters advance, (R) &
(D) have separate primaries
4. Reason for Primaries
Primaries are a sort of qualification round for
politicians. Possible candidates run against
their own party members. Top two vote getters
advance
The primaries effectively narrow down the
number of candidates
5. Super Tuesday
The general name for the tuesday in february
or march when states hold their primary
elections
6. Direct Primary Elections
Direct Primary Elections are when people vote
for candidates of their particular political party
directly instead of by delegates at a convention
