1. Point: Think about what you want to say. What are you trying to point out about whatever
text/poem you are writing about? Always read the question carefully and make sure you are
answering it. For example, if the question was asking about the effect of the language used in
a certain piece of text, one of your points could be something along the lines of : 'the
language used by the author sets the scene effectively, giving the reader a clear idea of the
character's surroundings'.
Quote: This is where you find a quotation from the piece of text to back up the point you just
made. In the case of the example above, you would find a quotation that demonstrates the
point made, such as 'The air was thick with fog.'
Explain: This is where you explain how the quotation you used demonstrates your point. In
this case, you would explain the effect that particular quotation has, such as 'the description
of the fog gives the feeling of mystery...' then you would elaborate a little bit more
