Emperor Go-Daigo was succeeded by one of his sons, but emperors began to have very little political power. By the 1490s, the Ashikaga shogunate lost power and merged with the Hosokawa samurai clan. A new emperor, Go-Kashiwabara, took the throne in the 1500s.
