Pervious Concrete
Also known as No fines, gap graded or porous concrete

2. Definition:-
 Pervious Concrete is a type of concrete with
high porosity used for concrete flatwork
applications that allow water from
precipitation and other sources to pass
directly through thereby reducing runoff
from a site and allowing ground water
recharging.
 The high porosity is attained by a highly
interconnected void content.

3.  It is a mixture of Cement, Coarse aggregate
and with or without sand and has enough
cementious paste to coat the coarse
aggregate while preserving the
interconnectivity of voids.
 This concrete is being used as paving material
to solve the storm water runoff to the
drainage system and minimize water
problems .

5. Pervious Concrete Pavements
 A mixture of Cement , Coarse aggregate and
with or without sand.
 Controlled amount of water and Cementious
material are use to create a paste that forms a
thick coating around aggregate particles without
flowing off during mixture and placing.
 Typical pervious concrete pavements has a 15-20
% void structures . It is consequently light weight
with density of 1600-1900 kg per cubic meter.

7. Properties:-
Density
• It depends on the properties of the material used
and on the compaction procedure used in
placement. Density from 1600-2000 kg per cubic
meter.
Permeability
• It depend on the material and placing.
Compressive Strength
• It normally lies between 3.5 to 28 Mpa.Typical
values are about 17Mpa.

8. Flexural Strength
• It generally lies between 1 to 3.8 Mpa.
• Factors influence the flexural strength are
degree of compaction, porosity and the
aggregate.
Shrinkage
• Drying shrinkage of pervious concrete
develops sooner but is much less than
impervious concrete
• Because of less shrinkage they are mainly
made control joints.

9. Environmental Benefits:-
 Reduces storm water runoff.
 Replenishes water table and aquifers .
 Allows for more efficient land development.
 Minimizes flash flooding and standing which
can be considered one of the main cause of
pollution.
 Mitigates surface pollutants.

10. Applications:-
 Pavements edge drains.
 Swimming pool decks.
 Trees gates in sidewalk.
 Tennis Courts.

12. Disadvantages:-
 Runoff from adjacent areas should be
prevented.
 The parking areas are generally limited to
auto parking and limited trucks.
 It is a new material that requires acceptances
from cities and states.
