EVALUATION
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
My magazine generally conforms
to conventions.
It features a central Masthead
which is reasonably conventional,
although many magazines feature
it on the left third for maximum
visual impact. My use of cover lines
and pugs is also quite
conventional.
These magazines
are
Mostly
conventional
although the third
magazine features
an unconventional
use of a long two
shot.
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
In general my magazine
is very conventional.
The title appearing in
the top left is very
conventional as is the
contents lines
appearing on the far
left.
In comparison, these contents pages
both conform to and challenge
conventions. The kerrang contents page
challenges conventions somewhat by
having a large amount of pictures on its
contents page. Where as on my contents
page I have used three images: a very
typical amount.
1. IN WHAT WAYS DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
USE, DEVELOP OR CHALLENGE FORMS AND
CONVENTIONS OF REAL MEDIA PRODUCTS?
My double page spread is
also very conventional.
The use of a picture to take
up a whole page is very
conventional for spreads.
These spreads
are also very
conventional,
spreads hardly
ever break
conventions.
These spreads all
feature text and
a title on one
page and a
picture on the
other. They also
feature pull
quotes some use
them for the title.
2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
My magazine likely represents the hip
hop sub-culture. This includes diversity in
hip hop culture which includes many
ethnic groups. Associations with the
subculture are rapping, breaking, DJing
and graffiti art.
From the new millennium, hip hop
fashion consisted of baggy shirts, jeans,
and jerseys.
However, as modern Hip Hop artists
have linked up with designers like Louis
Vuiton, the clothes got tighter, more
classically fashionable, and expensive.
2. HOW DOES YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT
REPRESENT PARTICULAR SOCIAL
GROUPS?
My magazine represents multiculturalism. In my
magazine I have used pictures of models from
various ethnic backgrounds.
This deals with the issue of race and a multi
ethnic society in Britain. They are also all
teenagers which likely indicates that my
magazine will likely appeal to teenagers more
than adults.
I have also used a female model for my front
cover as well as male models which address the
issue of gender.
3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
There are a small number of
companies that would likely
distribute my magazine.
IPC is an excellent choice for a distributor as
they have over 60 famous and successful
brands including their sole music magazine
NME.
However, due to NMEs success, it is unlikely
they would publish a new magazine along
side it as they would not want to jeopardise its
success, even though there is a gap in IPC for
my magazines genre.
Future plc has a large gap in its music
category as it does not have a music
magazine brand of my genre . This
means it would be more likely to publish
my magazine.
They would likely publish my brand as
they own many succesful brands and
could profit from a music brand of my
genre (Hip Hop and RnB.)
3. WHAT KIND OF MEDIA INSTITUTION
MIGHT DISTRIBUTE YOUR MEDIA
PRODUCT AND WHY?
The media institution that
would likely distribute my
magazine is Bauer. This is
because they have a
gap in the market for my
genre.
Moreover, as they do not
have a single successful
music magazine there is a
higher chance of them
publishing my magazine.
4. WHO WOULD THE AUDIENCE BE
FOR YOUR MEDIA PRODUCT?
• My magazine
represents many
areas of society. Most
notably
multiculturalism as I
have used models
from many ethnic
backgrounds in my
magazine.
My typical target
audience would be both
male and female, around
14-30 years of age and
likely from a working class
background.
They would likely be from
an ethnic background
although all backgrounds
would be encouraged.
5. HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
• My target audience is attracted
predominantly by the artists mentioned on
my front cover which would likely appeal to
their musical taste. The monotone/cool
colour scheme may also appeal to them.
They may also
be attracted by
the ‘Festival
Guide’ which
could prove
useful if they
had an interest
in music
festivals.
5. HOW DID YOU
ATTRACT/ADDRESS YOUR AUDIENCE?
The inclusion of
music charts may
also attract my
target audience if
they are interested
in popular music
and keeping up to
date with music
charts.
6. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF
CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
• The software I have used in the planning
and construction of my magazine is
Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign.
• Photoshop was highly effective as it
allows for easy and effective image
Manipulation and offers a wide amount of
customization.
It also allows multiple layers
Which helps build the layout of your
magazine and can be used effectively to
create a professional looking product.
6. WHAT HAVE YOU LEARNT ABOUT
TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE PROCESS OF
CONSTRUCTING THIS PRODUCT?
• I have learnt to use InDesign at a basic level. I have
learnt how to import and export documents.
• I have also learnt how to resize and re-colour
images and text in Photoshop
I also learnt how to
use the rectangle
tool to make a
divider
7. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT
DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION
FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
• I have learnt many things in the production of my
final magazine from my preliminary task to now.
I have learnt that the front
cover always has the model
making eye contact with the
audience
I have learnt about
puffs/pugs and how they
can be used to attract
the readers attention.
I have learnt that a
barcode must
appear on the
magazine if it is to
be sold.
I have learnt that
text shouldn’t be
too big or too
bold and that it
shouldn’t cover
the models face.
I have learnt that there is
usually one main story
that attract your target
audience and that the
model is also used to
attract your target
audience.
7. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT
DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION
FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
I have
learnt that
pictures
need to be
‘anchored’
with text
I have learnt that
there are usually
many features in a
magazine and
that there needs
to be a lot of small
text for the
features In order
for it to look
professional.
I have learnt
that there is
usually several
pictures on a
contents page.
I have learnt
that the issue
number and
date should
also appear
on the
contents
page.
7. LOOKING BACK AT YOUR PRELIMINARY TASK, WHAT
DO YOU FEEL YOU HAVE LEARNT IN THE PROGRESSION
FROM IT TO THE FULL PRODUCT?
For my double page spread I
have learnt that generally a
page(usually the left) is dedicated
to an image.
I have learnt
that double
page spreads
feature pull
quotes. These
are used to
summarise the
article and gain
the readers
attention.
I have learnt
that for the
article to look
professional it
must be of a
substantial
size and in a
small font.
I have learnt that the
name of your magazine
should appear on every
page in the magazine.
