The controversy lies in the differing perspectives of the causes of obesity among inner city africanamericans
This presentation will cover background, 2 expert perspectives on what the causes are and solutions, the stakeholder perspective and solution and the conclusion
Obesity is defined as having a body mass index of 30 or greater
Compared to any other ethnic group
58% of africanamerican males are obese and 67 % of africanamerican females are obese
People in lower income communities typically have high BMIs. 22% of African –Americans live below the poverty level compared to 8.4% of europeanamericans. This means more africanamericans are at a greater risk for higher BMIs
Because of high rates of obesity in the African- American community this population is two two times as likely to have diseases like……. Associated with the epidemic
Gregory freund is a professor and researcher at the university of illinois in the Division of nutritional sciences, his research focuses on obesity, diabetes. Linked to over nutrition and having too much of an unhealthy food .
“The underprivileged and economically depressed have access to bad, cheap, high fat foods” Little fruits and vegetables and focus on foods coated in sugar, flour, corn syrup, and have artificial flavors. Too many junk foods
Creates a more sustainable lifestyle when people eat less (eat in moderation) and exercise more.
Fast foods restaurants are ubiquitous in poor communities. Eat the same foods they ate as a child despite the change in health or metabolism. Causes people to pack on the pounds.
No facilities that promote exercise in inner city communities. People are deterrent to outdoor activity because of high crime rates
Younger africanamerican population glamorizes obesity. They view bigger bodies as being healthier and more attractive.
Hard to afford healthy foods like fruits and veggies on a fixed income. Supermarkets are the places with fresh produce but arent many located in inner cities, in inner cities you find pharmicies and food and liquor stores. It limits the food available to this community of people
Thyroid disease is having an underactive thyroid. Slows down the metabolism. Insulin, ad psychiatric medications contribute to weight gain
Access to supermarkets – fresh produce lower food prices because it is hard to get expensive healthy foods on fixed income
Meme Roth is the president and founder of National Action Against Obesity. It is normal in african- american culture. African americans think big bodies are acceptable because it is the norm in their communities
Real disservice to have government buying foods that contribute to this epidemic by allowing food stamps to cover junk foods
Food surrounds people24 hrs a day 7 days a week. They use the survival skill of eating all food available to them. Roth says its not in our DNA to do this. Our bodies cant handle the abundant amount of food
Free alternatives substitute water for sugar juices, free to walk don’t have to have gym membership
